William “Bernie” Edwards age 87
William “Bernie” Edwards age 87, died Friday evening, at Crestview Acres Care Center, Marion, following an extended illness.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello where friends called from 4 until 7 on Tuesday. Rev. Al Polito officiated at the services. Surviving are 5 children, William (Sandy) Edwards, Jean Luensman, Dana (Vicki) Edwards, Michael (Linda Varner) Edwards, John (JoAnn) Edwards all of Monticello, 12 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Esther in 2005, 3 brothers and 1 sister.
William Bernard “Bernie” Edwards was born August 31, 1924 at LaMotte, Iowa. He was the son of Jerome Patterson and Anna Barbara (Eisentrager) Edwards. He attended grade school in the rural schools of Jones County. Bernie graduated from the Anamosa Community Schools. Bernie served in the United States Army in Europe, during WWII as part of the Medical Corps.
William Bernard Edwards and Esther Smith were married February 9, 1948. Bernie worked at the Reliance Shirt Factory in Anamosa. In 1953, he moved his family to Monticello and began his employment at Edwards Department Store with Arch Edwards. He was employed by the Edwards family for 39 years before retiring. Bernie was a member of the Monticello Golf Club over 40 years. He was also active with the Monticello Cubs baseball team for several years and was an avid Cubs and Hawkeye fan.
Robert B. Lyon, 84
Robert B. Lyon, 84, of Center Junction, died Tuesday, February 7, 2012, at Jones Regional Medical Center in Anamosa, after declining health.
Funeral Services were held on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Center Junction, with Pastor Jean Bruinsma and Rev. Al Polito officiating. Friends called from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Lahey Funeral Home in Wyoming. Burial was in North Madison Pioneer Cemetery, rural Center Junction.
Robert Bruce Lyon was born on October 30, 1927 in Oxford Junction, the son of Edgar and Gladys (Clark) Lyon. He attended schools in Linn and Jones County. On August 10, 1948, he married Bonnie Hinrichsen at the First Presbyterian Church, Center Junction. They lived their married life in Center Junction until he entered the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Monticello on December 30, 2010.
He worked for Kennedy and Walter's Lumber Companies for 41 years.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Center Junction, having served as a trustee of the church. He was a volunteer fireman on the Center Junction Fire Department. He enjoyed carpenter work, gardening, fishing, hunting, and especially feeding and watching the birds.
Robert is survived by his wife, Bonnie of 63 years; 3 daughters, Anita (Roger) Benedict of Monticello, Sandra Lyon and Lou Ann (Robert) Gravel of Center Junction; 5 grandchildren, Rachel (Jeremy) Shover, Rodney (Theresa) Gravel, Thomas (Melissa) Benedict, Sarah (Andy Bradley) Benedict and Jacob (Chelsea) Gravel; 8 great-grandchildren; one brother, Darwin Lyon of Maquoketa; 3 sisters, Elaine Husmann of Mechanicsville, Doris (Dean) Tenley of Stanwood, and Patricia (George) Zirkelbach of Olin; 2 sisters-in-law, Pat Lyon of Wyoming and Phyllis Lyon of Davenport; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Robert in death are his parents, Edgar and Gladys, two sisters, Margaret Pegariek and Norma Tenley, and two brothers, Eugene and Kenneth.

Lorna M. Ruley, 81
Lorna M. Ruley, 81, of Oxford Junction, died Monday, February 6, 2012, at Maquoketa Care Center in Maquoketa.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, February 11, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oxford Junction, with the Rev. Greg Steckel officiating. Friends called from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at Lahey Funeral Home in Oxford Junction, where a scripture service was held at 7 p.m. Burial was in the Mayflower Cemetery, Oxford Junction.
Lorna Mae Husmann was born August 8, 1930, in Anamosa, daughter of Edward and Johanna "Mary" (Lubben) Husmann. She graduated from Anamosa High School. On January 29, 1955, she was united in marriage to Joe Ruley in Anamosa. They lived on the same farm their entire married life.
She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oxford Junction, and the Wapsie Unit 473 Legion Auxiliary. Lorna held several offices, including two terms as President. Since 1969, Lorna and Joe worked at the Legion sponsored dances. They also worked with Wapsie Unit 473 to establish the Avenue of Flags at the Mayflower Cemetery and headed the project for 13 years. Lorna also served as Oxford Township clerk, as well as treasurer for the Oxford Junction Cemetery Association. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge 363 in Clinton since 1985.
Lorna's well-known talent was sharing her cake making talent. She made cakes for all occasions for over 30 years. Lorna is survived by her husband, Joe Ruley of Oxford Junction; 2 children, Dawn (Paul) McDermott of Delmar and Mark Ruley of Mt. Vernon; 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Eloise Ricklefs of Anamosa, Loretta (Ron) Stahlberg of Waverly, and Mary Murray of Oxford Junction; 2 brothers, John (Pat) Lubben of Montezuma and Jim (Maureen) Lubben of Boston, MA; and 2 sisters-in-law, Josephine Behne and Nadine Ruley, both of Oxford Junction.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Brad Joseph on June 24, 2003, one brother, Robert in infancy, and one sister, Alice Sauer.

James Whitmore, 96
James Whitmore, 96, of, Cedar Rapids, formerly of Jones County, died Saturday, February 11, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Services were 1:30 p.m., Thursday, February 16, 2012 at the First Christian Church, Center Point, by the Rev. Kara Courtney. The family greeted friends at the church prior to the service on Thursday. Burial was in Center Point Cemetery, Center Point. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point.
Survivors include his wife, Doris; children, Kent L. (Deb) Willer of Marion, Jolene (Gerald) Huffman of Cave Creek, Arizona, and Janene Willer of Pocatello, Idaho; grandchildren, Heather (Steve) Rittgers, Allyson (Tom) Kendrick and Ryan (Jenny) Huffman; and great grandchildren, Haleigh, Keighley, Hadley, Halle, Emmy and Annie. James was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Paul Ehmsen; his sister, Valoria; and his niece, Jean Marie Darrell.
Born August 20, 1915, in Stanwood. James was the son of John and Sarah (Brewer) Whitmore. He graduated from Stanwood high school and then farmed in Jones County area.
James was a member of the First Christian Church in Center Point and the Anamosa Rotary Club for 40 years. He was a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award, served on the Jones county fair board, and was a vice president and president of the Farm Bureau.
James was a devoted husband and father and was well respected with lots of good friends. He was a generous, kind hearted man.
He enjoyed fishing at Leech Lake and vacations with his family and friends.
He lived in Cedar Rapids and wintered in Florida and Arizona.

Marjorie Ann Gordon Wozniak, 91
Marjorie Ann Gordon Wozniak, 91 died Friday, February 10, 2012 in Jones County Medical Center, Anamosa. Marjorie’s memorial service was held on Monday, February 13, 2012, 2 p.m., at Fairview Baptist Church, Fairview. Marjorie will be buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque, at a later date. Arrangements were made with Morgan Funeral Choices, Mount Vernon.
Marjorie is survived by her children; Gordon (Evie), Berkeley, California, Louise Lorenz of Anamosa, Lorraine (Dick) Andersen of Fremont, California, Karl (Rebekah) Wozniak of Salem, Oregon, Mario (Wanda) Wozniak of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Marjorie (Joel) Frederick of Brighton, Colorado, and Catherine (Pete) Meighan of, Junction City, Oregon.

Gloria (Chub) Mae Kula, 65
Gloria (Chub) Mae Kula, 65, of Anamosa died Tuesday January 31, 2012 at her home.
Services were held 10 a.m. Friday, February 3, 2012 at the Goettsch Funeral Home in Anamosa. Rev. Laurie Riley officiated at the service. Visitation was 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 2, 2012 at the funeral home in Anamosa. Internment was at the Cass Cemetery in rural Anamosa. Surviving are her 4 sisters Gail (John) Barnes of Cedar Rapids, Glenice (Kelly) Heskett of Anamosa, Glenda (Gerald) Covington of Laurie, MO and Gwen (Curt) Edwards of Monticello; 4 brothers Greg (Marilyn) Kula of Anamosa, Garold Kula of North Liberty, Gene (Diane) Kula of Springville and Gordon Kula of Anamosa; a special nephew Matt (Sara) Kula of Anamosa and several other nieces and nephews; She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers Richard, Gary and Galen; a sister Glarice and an uncle Leonard Kula.
Gloria Kula was born October 4, 1946 in Anamosa. She was the daughter of Leroy F. and Minnie B. (Shaw) Kula. She was a 1965 graduate of Anamosa High School. She lived most her life in the Cass Center Area. Gloria was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Anamosa. Gloria worked as a nurse’s aid and later an OMT. She enjoyed baking cookies, camping, long time pheasant admirer and going to the casino. Gloria was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, niece and friend and will be missed dearly by those closest to her.
David Paul Wilcox Sr., 72
David Paul Wilcox Sr., 72, of Martelle, passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2012, in Bushnell, FL from a period of deteriorating health with diabetes and a heart condition. Memorial services were held at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 27, at Martelle Christian Church. A luncheon will be served.
His sister, Sue Ford, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille E. Wilcox; a son, David Paul Wilcox Jr, and wife, Malinda of Martelle; two daughters, Debra L. Ludwig and husband Lance of Stratton, CO, and Donna L. McBride and husband, Mark of Crystal, MN; brothers, Roy Glosser, Stan Wilcox, John Wilcox, Dean Caple and Terry Huston; sister, Ann Roberts; and three grandchildren, David Paul Wilcox III, Catherine Ann Wilcox and Hunter McBride.
Dave was born April 22, 1939, in Fayette County, Iowa. The family moved to Evergreen Park, IL where he graduated from high school in 1957. Dave met his wife, Lucille Tanner, and they married February 28, 1959. After living in Evergreen Park for two years, Dave and Lucille moved to Drakesville, and farmed for the next three years. Then then moved to Martelle and Dave started working as a welder for Iowa Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids. After 10 years at Iowa Manufacturing, the entrepreneur bug bit him, and he left to start Wilcox Welding in Martelle.
Ever since, Dave has had success doing things his way. He started restoring antique cars in 1968 and adored the nostalgic era being brought back to life in recent years. He was always analyzing or problem solving the next project on his list. Dave enjoyed traveling, working with his hands and enjoying his projects.
He has touched the lives of many people and will be missed.
Charlotte E. Klatt, 93
Charlotte E. Klatt, 93 died Saturday, February 4, 2012 at the Clarence Nursing Home.
Services were held Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Clarence. Reverend David Mears officiated. Visitation was Tuesday from 4-6 p.m. at Chapman Funeral Home, Clarence. Burial was in Olin Cemetery.
Survivors include her son, Steve (Chrystal) of Olin; daughter Sybil Klatt of Madison, WI; four grandchildren, Eric and Michael (Carrie) Klatt, Nicole (Brian) Tenly and Stephanie (Bryan) Adams; seven great- grandchildren, Austin and Abby Tenley, Tyler, Trae and Tiffany Klatt, Henry and Jason Adams; sister, Beverly (Alan) Rohwedder of Olin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, one sister and two brothers in law.
Charlotte E. Klatt was born on September 1, 1918 to Michael and Eva (Easterly) Swenson. She married Henry Klatt on June 5, 1942 in Olin. Henry died August 22, 1995.
She was a member of the church, Women’s Fellowship, the order of the Eastern Star, Partners in study club, the American Legion Auxiliary and after retirement, she volunteered weekly at the Clarence Nursing Home. She taught at Clarence and Olin Schools for a combined 29 years until retiring in 1980.
Rosemary Anderson, 81
Rosemary Anderson, 81, of Keokuk died Friday, January 27, 2012 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.
She was born on March 5, 1930 in Jackson Township, Jones County, the daughter of John and Eileen (Aitchison) Miller. On March 5, 1952, Rosemary was united in marriage to Donald L. Anderson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He preceded her in death on October 21, 2000.
Rosemary graduated from Coggon High School in Coggon with the Class of 1949. She received her LPN certification from the Monticello Hospital in Monticello.
She had been employed at Collins Radio in Anamosa and Cedar Rapids for forty years, retiring in 1990. Following retirement, she and Don moved to Keokuk to be closer to their daughter.
She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Keokuk, the United Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union, the Isaac Walton Women’s Chapter and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Rosemary loved sewing and had made beautiful blankets for her grandchildren.
She enjoyed watching wildlife and birds and feeding the squirrels and deer, which wandered into her backyard. Rosemary loved the bright red cardinal and collected anything that had a picture of a red cardinal on it. She also enjoyed the challenge of putting together jigsaw puzzles. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, Don and they made several memorable trips to Las Vegas. Rosemary loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The time she spent with them was priceless and the memories that were made will live on in their hearts forever.
She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Vigen and her companion Theron Hartsock of Keokuk, two grandchildren, Melissa Vigen and her husband Jason Trone of Kahoka, MO and Matthew Vigen and his wife Whittney of Keokuk, three great-grandchildren, Brent and Ryan Tweedy and Kyliee Vigen and her crazy cat, Mabel.
She was preceded in death by one daughter in infancy, Penny Anderson, one sister, Joan Holub, one brother, Bob Miller and her four-legged friend, Barney.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Pastor John Raab officiating. Burial will be in the Keokuk National Cemetery.
Visitation will be held after will be held after 1 p.m. Monday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with the family meeting with friends from 6 – 8 p.m.

Bernice Alice Stoltz, age 97
Bernice Alice Stoltz, age 97, died Monday, January 23, 20121 at Jones Regional Hospital, Anamosa following a brief illness.Services will be held Friday, January 27, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Anamosa. Pastor Mona Burns will officiate at the service. Private family burial will take place at a later date at the Czech National Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Survivors include three daughters: Karen (Gary) Hansen, Sun City West, AZ, Susan (Ron) Hedglin, Streator, IL, Carlie (Tom) Asbury, Tuscan, AZ; six grandchildren, Kim Martins, Kari Kline, Jeff Hansen, Paula Greve, Jennifer Daubenspeck, and Megan Schlueter and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carl, beloved grand-daughter, Stacey Asbury, a brother Robert Blahnik and sister-in-law Jeanne Blahnik.
Bernice Alice Blahnik was born April 10, 1914 to Lumir and Alice Blahnik in Cedar Rapids. She graduated from Washington High School, Cedar Rapids in 1932. She worked in the office of Weaver Whitwer after graduation and at Collins Radio as a switchboard operator and then was employed at Honeymead Products Company where she met her husband to be. She married Carl A. Stoltz on August 12, 1939 in Cedar Rapids, a union of 61 ½ years. They spent 4 years in Joliet, Illinois during WWII and in 1946 moved to Anamosa where they made their home and raised their family.
She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Anamosa. She had been active member of the Anamosa Community Hospital Auxiliary for many years. As a young mother she was a Camp Fire Girls leader, leading her 3 daughters from Blue Birds through the Camp Fire Ranks. She also served on the Fairview Township Counting Board for many years.
