Sewer
Clog Caused by Towel by Michelle Phillips |
ANAMOSAAn aging sewage system may be partly to blame in the latest sewage
problem in Anamosa.
A sewage leak was discovered after an Anamosa resident
reported steam rising from Stallion Creek on the morning of December 23.
Larry Driscoll, Anamosa Public Works Director, said the sewage leak was caused
by a clogged sewer pipe at the lift station located near East Second Street and
Scott Street.
Ive been here six or seven years and weve
never had a plug there, he said. I think youll see more of it
with the aging system.
Driscoll said the sewer pipes in the area
are roughly 62 years old.
The culprit of the clog was a bath towel, but
it is unknown how it ended up in the sewer. Driscoll said a wide range of items
end up in the sewer system, many of which are flushed down the toilet.
Although the DNR was contacted, no fine was imposed on the city because the problem
was not due to system failure or operator error.
Driscoll estimates that
5,000-10,000 gallons of sewage was released into the creek before it was discovered
and rerouted. City workers used a portable pump to redirect the waste back into
the sewage system.
About 550,000-750,000 gallons of waste goes into the
sewer each day. |

Bridge
Work Underway by
Michelle Phillips |
 | An
employee of Iowa Bridge and Culvert, the company contracted to install the Hale
Bridge, dangles above the Wapsipincon River on December 22. A groundbreaking was
held for the project on December 10, and work to install piers, on which the bridge
will rest, began immediately. The piers must be complete before the Iowa National
Guard moves the bridge in March. The estimated cost of the project is over $400,000,
much of which will be covered by grants. |
