Newspaper to Sponsor Third Annual School Supply Drive |
Anamosa Publications is happy to announce our Third Annual School Supply Drive. The drive is intended to help children of families who may not be able to afford everything on the school supply list.
“Last year’s School Supply Drive was a huge success and we have decided to make a slight change for the 2006-2007 school year,” said Michelle Phillips, Editor, Anamosa Journal-Eureka.
“This year we will be sending all of the school supplies to Jones County Family Resource at Strawberry Hill. This will allow students from around the entire county to receive supplies. We will also offer donors the chance to donate cash to the school of their choice.”
If you would like to donate school supplies they can be dropped off at the newspaper office at 208 West Main Street between 9 am and 5 pm, Monday-Friday. Donations will be accepted through August 9.
“We are asking as well as encouraging community members for their assistance in helping area families with school supply needs,” said Phillips.
If you don’t have time to purchase items, cash donations will be accepted. That money will then be used to purchase supplies or pay book fees for those who can’t afford it. You may also make a donation to a specific school in Jones County.
Those who need supplies should contact Jones County Family Resource Association at 319-462-5318.

Golf Outing Held for Jones County K-9 Officer, Nitro
by Michelle Phillips |
The Fourth Annual Golf Tournament for Nitro, the Jones County Sheriff Department’s K-9 officer, was held at Monticello Golf Club on June 30.
Dawn Koob, committee member for the event, said a new committee is formed each year with planning for the golf outing beginning in April.
Koob said, “Since this is a Jones County event, we decided to do it at different courses in the county.”
Nitro and his partner, Jeff Swisher, gave a demonstration to show some of the ways the dog is used by the Sheriff’s Department. |

Swisher got a “suspect” to run away from the dog as if he were fleeing and gave him commands. Nitro chased down the suspect and attacked him until Swisher called him off.
Following the demonstration, golfers registered for the 4-person best shot tourney, which teed off at 11 am.
Golfers had the option of entering raffles, bidding at a silent auction and buying tickets for a 50/50 drawing. A steak dinner was also included in the price of registration.

KCRG is adopting your town as “Our Town” this summer! TV9’s annual tour of Eastern Iowa continues in Our Town Anamosa. Anamosa is one of five progressive communities we will feature during our newscasts in July and August. Ungochyu to Perform at Park
|
Ungochyu is the catchy name that Anamosa High School (AHS) Junior, Kyle Kilburg came up with for the four member rock band. Chandler Capron(lead guitar), Michael Blankenship (lead vocals and guitar), Kyle Kilburg (Drums), and Bethany Kula (Bass) round out the group.
The band has added a new member since their last performance in WapsiAna Park on June 15.
The new member is Brandon Breitbach, a 2004 graduate of Anamosa High School. Breitbach will sing lead vocals on a few songs and plays the guitar and bass guitar.
Ungotchyu performs Thursday, July 6 at 7 p.m. and again on July 7 at 7 p.m.
Bring a lawn chair or blanket and come out to Anamosa’s WapsiAna Park to check out four of Anamosa’s high school students play their version of familiar rock tunes with their own eclectic flair.
Bring a lawn chair or blanket and head down to WapsiAna for the free concert.
