Community Turns Out for Veterans Day Assembly
By Michelle Phillips |
Area residents streamed into the Anamosa High School gymnasium for the 13th Annual Veterans Day Assembly, hosted by the Anamosa Student Council on November 12.
Student Council President Anne Daily welcomed the guests and students and thanked them for their attendance.
Immediately following, the AHS choir sang the National Anthem, and Strawberry Hill Student Council lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
The audience was then shown a video compiled by Becky DirksHaugsted, which showed photos of soldiers in Iraq, school children in Anamosa making found poems and placemats. It also featured a group of Strawberry Hill kids working on care package to send to Iraq. DirksHaugsted also created a documentary about the Freedom Rock near Greenfield. The video showed photos of all of the different scenes that have been painted on the rock since 1999.
Double service awards were given to the following people, posthumously: DA Buddy Downing, David N. Gray, David L. Pillard, Paul H. Zimmerman, John Smith and James Heitland.
The following also received Double Service awards: Al Conrad, James A. Slach, Robert Fulweider, Karen Theriault, Stephen Theriault, David B. Grassfield, William S. Cunningham, Paul Pinney and Don Folkerts.
To receive a Double Service award, the recipient must be an employee or former employee of the school district and have served in the military.
Congressman Bruce Braley was the keynote speaker at this year’s event. He told the crowd about his family’s military history. He spoke of how his cousin and father had a close bond due to their military service.
“My cousin flew home from around the world to make sure Taps was played at my father’s funeral as he was lowered into the ground,” Braley recalled.
He spoke about taking his mother to Washington DC for the WWII Memorial dedication and the overwhelming feeling of a rainbow arched over the memorial during the dedication ceremony.
Braley said this is one of the reasons he has spearheaded legislation to help veterans and their families, including requesting an investigation into why the 1st Battalion, 133rd infantry was denied full GI Bill benefits and voting to make a military tax cut permanent.
He then led the students in giving the attending veterans a group thank-you.
Jean Bliss then addressed the crowd and told them about the Wounded Warriors program, which gives hospitalized soldiers toiletries, phone cards and sweat suits. She thanked the Student Council and the community for their generosity in donating to the assembly and the Wounded Warriors organization.
The AHS band and sixth choir were also on hand with musical selections.
Guests were invited to attend the annual Veterans Day luncheon at the Lawrence Community Center. The meal was also sponsored by the student council. Free will donations were accepted to help pay for next year’s event. |
