Young earns trip to state
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor

ANAMOSA — In front of a packed to overflowing crowd inside the Anamosa High School gym Saturday, February 9, Raiders Derek Young, Travis Keltner and Mitch Hewitt made their bids for trips to the state wrestling tournament in Des Moines competing at the pressure-filled class 2A district tournament.

“A lot of guys feel there’s more pressure here at districts than there is at the state tournament,” said Anamosa wrestling coach Ron Timp. “Everyone wanted to get to state so much, once you’re there, the pressure is off a little bit. That’s what makes districts so tough. It’s the last meet before state.”

With not only a state berth hanging in the balance, but his high school wrestling career as well, Young earned a trip to Wells Fargo Arena and followed in the footsteps of his brother Robert who qualified for state a year ago for the Raiders.

“It’s always a good feeling getting someone to the state level,” said Timp as Young placed second at 140-pounds to secure his trip to Des Moines and the four-day state tournament which begins Wednesday, February 13. “It’s a great accomplishment for Derek, his family, the school and the community making it to this level. We’re very proud of his accomplishments this year and he’s worked very hard to get to this point.”

Young opened his district tournament with an impressive 5:10 pin win over Davenport Assumption’s Tommy Argo.

The Raider senior dominated the 140-pound semi-final bout leading 10-3 before putting Argo away in the third period.
“Derek was ready to go and went out and wrestled a great match,” said Timp. “He controlled the whole match and never let Argo in at any time.”

In the championship, Young was handed a 12-4 loss against No. 7 ranked Ryan Hand of Wilton.

“In this match, Derek didn’t stick to his game plan and things just kind of got more and more out of control,” said Timp. “He was able to re-gain control in the third period and made a run at the kid, but it was way too little too late.”

Finishing with the win

Young trailed 7-2 in the third period and scored an early escape in the finale frame, but a takedown and three-point nearfall ended any hopes of a comeback.

Keltner’s day got off to a very rough start but closed with a bang.

“Travis was in a car accident before the meet and might have still been a little shaken up in his first match,” said Timp as the accident left several bruises on Keltner’s body. “This was a match I felt Travis would normally have won, but that didn’t happen.”

Keltner was handed a 3-2 loss in his 215-pound semi-final at the hands of North Cedar’s James Kost.

“When you don’t get that first one, that makes things pretty tough at districts and takes the control out of your hands.”

Keltner bounced back and closed out his day and Raider wrestling career with a sensational 9-7 win over West Delaware’s Adam Mossner.

“Travis was just one match away from state and that’s something to be proud of,” said Timp as Keltner placed third overall. “He battled and battled and the more the West Delaware crowd got into the match, the more pumped up Travis got.”

Two second period penalty points and a huge escape in the third keyed the consolation triumph.

Hewitt also placed third at the meet wrestling at 130-pounds, opening with a 1:12 pin loss against Wilton’s Taylor Hammes before being handed a forfeit win over Dubuque Wahlert’s Quinn McCullough.

“Mitch had a tough kid in his semi-final match and didn’t get a chance to wrestle-back,” said Timp. “Finishing third here as a sophomore is quite an accomplishment. Mitch really came on this year and with some more hard work should have another chance at this level next year, too.”

Young opens his state meet in Des Moines against Creston’s No. 3 ranked Trent Tucker (39-3) Wednesday, February 13.

Taking one last WaMaC test
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor

ANAMOSA — Wins have been hard to come by for the Anamosa girls basketball team lately, and with just one more chance to shine before class 3A regional basketball gets started, Raider coach Jack Leighty really wanted to see a solid effort out of his club in their WaMaC and regular season finale hosting a talented West Delaware team Saturday, February 9.

“We took the approach with this game as being the start of a new season,” said Leighty as his team hosted the Hawks at the Strawberry Hill gymnasium as the Anamosa High School gym was packed to the rafters with wrestling fans as the Raiders hosted the class 2A district tournament. “It had been quite a while since we had actually played a game with all the weather cancellations we’ve been having lately and I think that probably wound up being a good thing for us.”

Anamosa (7-12, 6-9) hoped the new environment and a renewed approach was exactly what Leighty had ordered in getting the Raider girls back into the win column.

The strategy proved perfect as Anamosa pulled away for a big 55-40 victory over the Hawks with three girls scoring in double figures and everyone contributing to the triumph in some way, shape for form.

“I think next year, we’ll play all our home games here at Strawberry Hill,” said Leighty jokingly who works as a gym teacher in the facility. “I think it was a neat experience for the girls to get to play a game here. We all enjoyed it.”

Raider fans also enjoyed the start to the contest as the Anamosa girls stormed to a quick 13-6 advantage and at the first quarter horn, led 13-7.

“We had quite a few girls get into the action there in the early going,” said Leighty as Kayla Sanborn, Paige Goetz, Lauren Buck and Jackie Engelbart all scored baskets getting the hosts going in the first half. “Our ball movement was very good and we also did a good job of taking care of the basketball too.”

The Hawks made a run in the second quarter, as after Anamosa went on a 10-3 spurt taking a 23-10 advantage, the visitors tallied a half-ending 10-1 run of their own to close to within 24-20 of the Raiders at the break.

“For the most part we did a nice job of controlling West Delaware around the basket,” Leighty.
“But we lost them a few times on the perimeter and that hurt us in the second quarter.”

West Delaware’s Ashley Hood drilled three long 3-pointers, including one just before the second quarter buzzer, to pull the Hawks to within four points.

The third quarter saw the Raiders take control once again going on a 7-2 run right out of the break and out-scored West Delaware 13-8 in the frame to lead 37-28 heading into the fourth quarter.

“We did a nice job holding a comfortable 8-9 point lead most of the fourth quarter until we got to the free throw line and stretched it out at the end,” said Leighty as Goetz, Lauren Buck and Kayla Zumbach all hit fourth quarter free throws to seal the Raider victory. “This is a nice win to get us some momentum going into regionals. We needed this win and we were focused and got it. Hopefully we can keep this up and get back to playing the way we had been most of the season until the last couple of weeks.”

The Raiders, who said goodbye to lone senior Christy Coons on Senior Night, stretched their advantage gradually through the entire eight-minute stretch.

Goetz was sensational for the hosts leading the scoring effort pouring in 21 points drilling 5-of-13 shots from the field and also connected twice from beyond the 3-point arc.

Sanborn and Buck added 13 points each to the effort

Taking the first tournament step
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor
WYOMING — There was little doubt as to who was going to be advancing down the class 1A tournament trail and who would be heading home having their 2007-2008 campaign ended Thursday, February 7 as the Midland girls basketball team hosted Bellevue in a district semi-final contest.

“I thought our girls came out and played very hard tonight,” said Eagle girls basketball coach Josh Bentley as he watched with sheer delight as his team completely crushed the Comets under a 69-23 avalanche of superior defense that led to countless easy baskets for the hosts. “We really played well on the defensive end of the floor too.”

Playing well would be putting it modestly as to what Midland (16-5, 9-2) accomplished in their playoff opener.
The hosts forced Bellevue into a whopping 34 turnovers and seemed to be able to steal the basketball almost at will against the Comets, who struggled even reaching half-court with the dribble before the Eagles would steal it and turn the opportunity into an easy lay-up.

After the opening tip, Caitlin Bisinger raced to the hoop and scored on an easy lay-up for the Midland girls, and the play would be one repeated time and again by several Eagles as the team rolled to the 46-point rout.

““I was very proud of our production off the bench too” said Bentley. “But really we look for production from everyone. Everyone has a role and does a good job at their role.”

Everyone played a part in the role of stealing the basketball as Midland tallied a whopping 26 in the contest with Bisinger leading the way swiping eight while Channing Paulsen and Shasta Eganhouse added four more each.

“We need to keep focused and keep playing defense,” said Bentley. “It doesn’t get any easier for us, so we have to take it one game at a time and have fun working and playing together.”

Midland exploded to a 19-2 lead and at the first quarter horn led 21-5 before going on a 13-4 run in the second stanza to build a commanding 34-9 halftime lead.

After holding the Comets to just four points in the third quarter, the hosts took a huge 47-13 advantage into the final frame.

With Bentley using his bench exclusively, the Eagles continued to roll pouring in a 22-point final frame advancing to the district final with the triumph.

Bisinger and Katie Leonard led the hosts scoring 13 points each while Paige Paulsen added eight more.

Eganhouse dished out a team-high seven assists and scored six points.
