by Michelle Phillips |
Jones Regional Medical Center (JRMC) will give a public announcement of its plans for a new facility on January 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the Lawrence Community Center in Anamosa. Updates on the plans for a new facility and a capital campaign will be given.
“It’s basically to announce our future goals,” said Michelle Brock JRMC Public relations and Foundation Director.
The site plans for the facility are complete, and many details of the plans have been presented to the Jones County Supervisors, who sold three acres of land to JRMC, as well as the Anamosa City Council.

The new Jones Regional Medical Center is slated to be built on Highway 64. The facility will be connected to Anamosa Family Practice on the right. |
“There could still be some tweaking going on–there could be minor changes,” Brock included.
The 22-bed hospital would be located on Highway 64 and connected to Anamosa Family Practice.
Brock said a fundraising campaign would also be underway to raise part of the $12.8 million dollars needed to build the hospital. Donations are expected to be solicited from Anamosa and surrounding communities.
“We want to make sure it meets the needs of the community but keep the cost down as well,” Brock said of the price tag.
Brock said that there will be several announcements on January 28 and encourages the public to attend.
“I think it will be an exciting event,” she concluded. |

Sams Pleads Not Guilty, 911 Tape Sealed
By Michelle Phillips |
Wendy Sams of Anamosa has pleaded not guilty to charges that she attempted to murder Jenette Gralund of rural Anamosa.
Sams is accused of hitting Gralund with a blunt wooden object and attempting to smother her with a pillow before Gralund escaped to a neighbor’s home. The incident was reported to the Jones County Sheriff’s office on January 7.
Sams made her initial court appearance in Jones County District court before Judge David M. Remley on January 16. At the appearance, an arraignment date was set for January 18.
A list of witness in the case was also named on January 15 and included: the Jones County Sheriff Mark Denniston, sheriff’s deputies, doctors who treated Gralund, an official with the University of Iowa Department of Public Safety, Gralund’s husband, Chris, and the Gralunds neighbor’s Jeffrey and Janet Fliehler.
During the arraignment, David A. Cmelik, attorney for Sams, filed an injunction to prevent the 911 tape of the incident from being made available to the public. The injunction cites media attention, and the tape potentially inhibiting her right to a fair trial as reasons for the injunction. Remley granted the suppression of the 911 tape.
Cmelik also filed a motion to allow the defendant to examine photos of the alleged crime scene, access to items seized and access to searched vehicles in the investigation. Remley granted his motion.
Sams waived her right to a preliminary hearing as well as her right to a speedy trial. Judge Remley approved both waivers at the arraignment.
The conditions of her bond, which was set at $50,000 cash, were also upheld during the arraignment appearance, and she was ordered to remain in the Jones County jail.
The pretrial conference was then set for June 13 at 10 a.m., and a jury trial was scheduled for June 23 at 9 a.m.
Jones County Attorney Connie Ricklefs is the prosecuting the case. |

Anamosa School Foundation Pulls in Record Amount at Auction
By Michelle Phillips |
The Anamosa School Foundation auction held a record-breaking event on January 19 at Fawn Creek Country Club in Anamosa.
According to foundation secretary Matt McQuillen, the foundation is expected to raise over $30,000 when all is said and done.
“We’ve gone from $12,000 to $20,000 to $30,000. That’s pretty amazing,” McQuillen exclaimed.
The annual dinner brings out leaders in the community and within the school district each year to raised money for projects that might not be otherwise funded. This year was no exception as over 100 people turned out to socialize and bid on both silent and live auction items.
Once again, the quilt made by Nancy Stout’s second grade cornerstone class fetched the highest price at $2,700.
Students create a quilt each year as a class project.
During the auction, Strawberry Hill Principal Reona Ewald was asked to model one of the items up for auction. McQuillen approached Ewald with a Dillard’s gift box and told her that the clothing inside was “a one-piece.” Last year, Ewald modeled a dress that was donated to the foundation.
McQuillen told Ewald he had pledges of about $1,000 she would model the item. During the auction, a few others pledged $50 each.
Relief spread over Ewald face when she was given the item, a pair of coveralls.
Auction-goers could also try their hand at a variety of games, including a ring toss, gem dig and “Deal or No Deal”. All of the proceeds benefiting went to the foundation.
The board members for the Anamosa School Foundation volunteered their time at the event, and auctioneer Brett Barner also volunteered his services.
Some of the projects completed by the Anamosa School Foundation include an AP biology class, an online ACT prep class, books and computers.

Pledges were accepted before the auction to persuade Ewald to model the clothing. The pledges total about $1,000. |
