The conference wheels keep spinning recently, as it now appears Anamosa and Monticello, as well as four other schools, could possibly form a new league.
Anamosa superintendent Brian Ney will be heading to a meeting in Maquoketa representing the Raiders’ athletic interests Wednesday, December 21, with that topic being the main course of discussion.
“This is just a very preliminary meeting to gauge interest from the six schools on whether or not they would like to pursue this new conference venture or not,” said Ney. “My main concern is that Anamosa is still a class 3A school, and all of the other schools involved in this process at this time are all 2A institutions. It wouldn’t be in our best interest to play all 2A schools and then when it comes to tournament time have to jump up to the 3A level. If we become a 2A school, then this appears a good option, but right now it’s very, very preliminary.”
Just a few weeks ago there was discussion of Anamosa possibly joining the Cedar Valley Conference (CVC).
Talk of that move has cooled recently, as it now appears the Raiders, as well as Monticello, Cascade, Northeast, Camanche and Bellevue could have a desire to start a new conference. All five schools will be attending the meeting in Maquoketa with Ney.
“Of course a six-team conference is not one we would want start with,” said Ney. “Six is too small, but if after this meeting there is interest from the six schools involved, we would explore options as far as gauging interest from a couple of other schools in the area to join.”
Maquoketa Valley, Tipton, North Cedar, Center Point-Urbana are all possibilities, along with several other area schools.
The time-table for a new conference shift wouldn’t be until the 2014-2015 school year according to Ney, leaving ample time if the Raiders do indeed decide to leave the powerful class 3A WaMaC Conference.
It was originally reported Monticello, as well as Bellevue, Cascade and Northeast all had invitations to the CVC if the state forced Camanche into the league.
Apparently, that will not and did not happen.
But if the state does rule that Camanche be placed into the CVC, and that ruling is expected in the next couple of weeks, the ball will start rolling and several local schools could be on the move............... again.
