Bruising battle at E. Buchanan
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor

Hard to the hoop
Raider senior Derek Hart goes right at East Buchanan’s Cameron Harp scoring two of his eight points during Anamosa’s 48-38 loss Tuesday, December 20, in Winthrop. In a very physical game with the talented Buccaneers, the Raiders could not quite make that one huge run to take a lead in suffering the 10-point setback in the final basketball contest before the Christmas break. WINTHROP — Inside the cozy comforts of the East Buchanan gym Tuesday, December 20, it appeared the Anamosa boys basketball team and the host Buccaneers were going to light up the scoreboard running up and down the court at sprinting speeds early on.

But once the contest settled down, defense dominated and helped spark the hosts to a 48-38 victory over the Raiders.

“Defensively we are a pretty good team,” said Anamosa boys basketball coach Kevin Barnes after the 10-point setback in the final game for both teams before the Christmas break. “We played hard and rebounded better, but our offense is inconsistent and we still struggle taking care of the ball.”

Anamosa (2-3, 2-2) hung tough with East Buchanan early on trailing just 10-8 after one frame, but as the second quarter wore on, the Raider offense struggled more and more as the Buccaneers took a 20-13 lead into the halftime break.

“We are, at times, our own worst enemy,” said Barnes. “We make a mistake, but instead of battling through it, we drop our heads and compound the mistake with another mistake, which is usually a mental one.”

Even with the offensive struggles, Anamosa kept in the hunt for a win at East Buchanan holding a vaunted Buccaneer lineup back with staunch defense.

But every time it appeared the Raiders would make a run, the hosts would always seem to have an answer keeping their advantage at 8-10 points most of the second half.

“I am pleased with the way Tony (Lueken) shot the ball tonight,” said Barnes. “I thought Miles (Weber) played a great floor game and I really thought Derek (Hart) played a solid second half offensively to go with his good defensive effort in both halves.”

Hart scored all eight of his points in the final 16 minutes while Colten Kelly added all seven of his points in the second half as well. Lueken played a sensational game leading Anamosa with 14 points scoring seven in each half.

“My concern now is that we don’t shut down,” said Barnes. “We have to battle every day in practice and keep believing we can improve everyday. If we continue to do that, success will follow.”

Christmas comes early for Raiders

Determined to win
Anamosa senior Megan Carpenter embodied the Raider spirit with this play Tuesday, December 20, as Anamosa fought back for a furious 47-44 triumph at East Buchanan. WINTHROP — It felt like Christmas on the court after the Raider girls basketball pulled out an amazing 47-44 triumph at East Buchanan Tuesday, December 20.

Unwrapping presents wasn’t supposed to be for another five days, but Anamosa gave themselves, their coaches and their fans who made the trip to Winthrop a great gift rallying from a 15-point deficit to defeat a very talented Buccaneer club.

“What a way to head into the Christmas break playing and winning a game like this one,” said a euphoric Raider girls basketball coach Jack Leighty after the come-from-behind road victory. “I knew all along this team was capable of doing something like this and to see it all play out on the court was great to watch. The heart this team showed and the determination to never give up even when things weren’t exactly going our way in the first half.”

Anamosa (3-7, 3-3) was struggling mightily to score points in the second quarter as the hosts went on an 8-2 spurt in the frame to take a 26-13 lead into the locker room at the halftime break.

“It wasn’t like we were turning the ball over a whole lot and not getting good looks at the basket,” said Leighty. “We were. The shots just weren’t falling and east Buchanan seemed to be hitting everything they threw up there.”

The Buccaneers held an 18-11 lead after a frantic first quarter of offense but in the second half, Anamosa changed the pace and turned the game around with a wild momentum swing.

“We turned up the defensive pressure and really forced East Buchanan into doing things they weren’t comfortable doing,” said Leighty. “That really seemed to get our intensity up and our offense just started clicking then too.”

Trailing 28-13 in the third quarter and seemingly headed to a loss, the Raider girls pressured the hosts forcing turnovers and turned up the level on their offensive sets as well attacking the basket each and every possession.

Anamosa outscored East Buchanan 14-11 in the frame and trailing by 10 points, 37-27, with eight minutes remaining.

“With the way things were swinging, we knew we had plenty of time to make a comeback,” said Leighty. “And we did it.”

Delivering a win

The Raiders went on a 10-0 spurt to open the fourth quarter, tying the contest on a Bryn Gerber basket with 4:25 left. After Kara Beatty put the hosts back on top 39-37, Gerber delivered a sensational pass to Sara Schultejans for a hoop tying the score again.

East Buchanan’s Krissy Steffen converted on a 3-point play with 3:24 remaining giving the Buccaneers a 42-39 lead, but Kelsi Dearborn scored cutting the deficit to a point. Paige Goetz swished home a long trey with just over a minute remaining and the Raiders had a lead they would not relinquish, 44-42.

Traci Dirks and Schultejans converted on clutch free throws in the waning seconds securing the thrilling three-point triumph.

“Paige really came up huge with that 3-pointer,” said Leighty. “That’s pretty clutch, especially for a freshman. Everyone helped in this win. Our pressure defense, our offense and our energy really did the job and turned what looked like was going to be a loss into a huge momentum builder for us heading into the break.”

Dirks led the Raider offense with 14 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds. Goetz added 10 points.

Anamosa wrestlers top Ed-Co
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor
ARLINGTON — There aren’t too many times when picking up one win on the wrestling mat equates to a team dual victory, but that was the case for the Anamosa wrestling team Tuesday, December 20.

The Raiders received six forfeit wins while giving up two of their own and rolled to a 42-30 triumph over Ed-Co in a triangular at Starmont.

Mike Levasseur, Jordan Alderdyce, Derek Young, Brady Vaughn, Jared Husmann and Lee Hardersen all received forfeit triumphs while Travis Keltner picked up the lone Raider victory wrestled on the mat posting an impressive 3:37 pin win over Travis Loeffelholz.

“Ed-Co only had six guys there but what we were looking at were our kids who actually wrestled and we did not have a good match,” said Raider wrestling coach Ron Timp. “When you only win one of four matches, that’s never good but with all those forfeits, we had enough points to win anyway.

The Raiders trailed 30-18 when Young, Vaughn, Husmann and Hardersen closed the match with consecutive forfeit wins.

“Travis did a nice job pinning his kid,” said Timp. “But the rest of our kids were just as capable of winning. Curtis did have a tough kid to wrestle in his match though.”

Anamosa closed out the night with a 54-30 loss against the host Stars.

“We did a much better job in this dual than we did against Ed-Co, said Timp. “We won 5-of-8 matches and just seemed to match-up better with them. That’s what it all comes down to, match-ups and we did well this time.”

Keltner posted a 4:58 pin triumph over Logan Flexsenhar putting the Raiders on the board at 189 pounds against the Stars but the hosts then rolled off six straight wins to take a commanding 42-6 lead. Paustian then pinned Josh Arenson at 130 pounds in 3:14 then Vaughn tallied an injury default win at 140 pounds. Hardersen pinned Aaron DeLong in a mere 1:49 at 152 pounds and Levasseur did the same to Austin Bissell at 160 pounds in just 1:07 to finish off the dual.

“Mike and Lee continue to wrestle well,” said Timp as the Raiders competed without Jeff Ingles, Robert Young and Josh Noland. “Travis has been looking good too.”
