Coming together as a team
By
Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor |
ANAMOSA — Don’t even look at the team scores at the annual Lady Raider Early Bird track meet hosted by a youthful Anamosa girls’ team Tuesday, April 11.
Those numbers don’t matter one single bit to coach Wes Wilson as he watches and teaches this group to not only come together as a team, but work well with each other mixing and matches runners and looking to be as competitive as possible this spring.
“We do have some girls who are competing hard and running very, very well,” said Wilson after Anamosa ran at their own track for the first time this spring. “We also have some girls who may not be finishing in the front of the pack, but are giving it all they’ve got and are here trying to get themselves into better shape and are running and competing to help this program excel. Either way, this is a team that is improving and by the end of the season, will be posting some of their best times in just about every event.”

Go, go Raiders

Breaking loose

Cammy Dole continued her sensational spring placing for the Raiders in the 200 meter dash after a sizzling 27.70 clocking.
“Cammy has placed in every 200 meter dash event we’ve run this year and I don’t see that stopping any time soon,” said Wilson. “For a freshman to run so well so soon is a big plus for the program.”
Cassie Beadle also scored for the hosts in the shot put event after her 33’ toss earned the Raiders fourth-place points.
“Like Cammy, Cassie has been a consistent scorer for us already this season as well,” said Wilson. ““She’s been throwing the shot and the discus well and giving us some field event points with Liz McAtee. They make a nice 1-2 combination for us.” |
Anamosa’s distance medley team crossed the finish line sixth overall as Christy Coons, Katelyn Jamison, Candace Bieber and Dole combined to post a time of 4:48.46.
“Our middle distance runners are doing a nice job and our sprinters are gradually coming along too,” said Wilson. “We don’t have a whole lot of girls out but the ones who are here are girls who can make a difference. It just makes it hard to compete as a team with the numbers we have. No one can fault these girls’ effort though.”
Beadle also just missed placing for the Raiders in the discus event as her 100’ 1’’ toss was seventh-best in on the day.
Coons, Maisie Timp, Jamison and Courtney Schnepf ran the 4x100 team to a 57.99 clocking while Dole, Ashton Darrow, Bieber and Ashley Frasher ran the 4x400 team crossing the finish line with a time of 4:39.40.
“Our relays have some potential,” said Wilson. “We’re looking at the 4x100, 4x200 or even the sprint medley as events that could eventually score points for us.”
The Raider girls competed at Tipton Saturday, April 15, and were led by McAtee’s third-place effort in the shot put after a 35’ 9 3/4’’ toss. Dole also ran fifth in the 200 in 28.12. |
 Bouncing back from adversity

TIPTON — It could have been the beginning of the end for a promising Anamosa boys golf season Saturday, April 15, but seniors Shawn Parmenter, Derek Hart, Drew Corpstein and Dillon Eggers wouldn’t allow for any drop of play turning in phenomenal efforts guiding the team to a championship at the challenging Tipton Invitational.
“Our seniors really stepped it up and lead us to the title,” said Raider boys golf coach Brad Mangler after his team blew away the nine-team field firing a blistering 310 score overall at the 18-hole tournament. “I was interested to see what direction we were going to take after our tough loss against Monticello four days earlier and the team responded the way I knew and hoped they would.”

Following through

The Raiders dominated the leader board posting four scores in the tournament top-7 overall as Parmenter led all Anamosa golfers on the par-36 Tipton Country Club course with a round of 75 (38-37) which was also tied for second-best score overall on the beautiful day.
“I think that loss to Monticello was an early wake-up call for these guys,” said Mangler. “This was just a great effort at Tipton. I knew we were good enough to win this tournament, but even I didn’t know this score was possible and beating a pretty good field of teams like that.”
The Raiders topped runner-up North Cedar (326) by a whopping 16 shots and were 25 strokes better than third-place West Liberty (335). Rounding out the Tipton tournament field were the host Tigers (337), Mount Vernon (340), Central DeWitt (346), West Branch (347), Maquoketa (349) and Wilton (351).
“Hart added a round of 78 (37-41) and was fifth overall at the tournament while Corpstein was sixth with his 78 (38-40). Eggers fired a 79 (40-39) which was the seventh-best score at the invitational.
“I think the seniors just took things upon themselves,” said Mangler.
“They didn’t want to see this season washed away after just one frustrating performance and they showed what Anamosa golf is made of.”
Colten Kelly added a round of 86 (45-41) while Tyler Parmenter, playing in his first varsity tournament, carded an 89 (44-45). |

Get there!

North Cedar’s Justin Doser led all golfers winning the individual title with a 74 (38-36) while Tipton’s Brock Huston edged Parmenter for the runner-up medalist honors firing a 75 (38-37).
“The seniors showed great consistency,” said Mangler. “Having four scores in the top-7 of a big tournament is pretty good.”
The Raiders hosted rival Monticello Tuesday, April 11, in a key Tri-Rivers Conference match at the Fawn Creek Country Club and were handed their first loss of the 2006 season after a 166-172 final.
“Conditions weren’t exactly ideal but they weren’t any different than some of the conditions we’d golfed in already this spring,” said Mangler. “The wind was howling and the greens were hard and that made things difficult on us, but Monticello had the same issues and they just shot the better round.”
Shawn Parmenter led all golfers on the course taking meet medalist honors with a solid round of 38 while Hart (43) and Kelly (45) also counted. Kalib Seeley and Eggers tied for the final counting score with rounds of 46 each.
Corpstein made his way through the Fawn Creek course with a 47.
“We just struggled, there’s not a whole lot to say other than that,” said Mangler. “Monticello has a pretty good golf team too. They’re very young, but they’re, obviously, also very good too.”
Monticello’s Zach Utter claimed meet runner-up medalist honors with a 40.
The Anamosa JV boys golf team rolled to a big 183-227 rout of the Panthers as Lenny Rhomberg and Max Etten paced the hosts with rounds of 44 each.
Rhomberg claimed the meet medalist award on the card-back while Etten was named runner-up.
“Our JV guys continue to play very, very well and our team competition is only making us better,” said Mangler. “Our goal is to golf 180 or lower but in those conditions, a 183 is still very respectable.”
Eric Luchtenberg scored a 46 for the Raiders while Deg Reynolds added a 49. Tyler Parmenter fired a 50 with Adam Andreesen carding a 52 on the day. |

ANAMOSA — The sensational start to the 2006 Anamosa girls golf season continued Monday, April 10, as the Raiders ripped visiting Alburnett in a 208-250 final at the Wapsi Country Club.
“Not only are we golfing very, very well right now but we had three freshman count for four of our scores in this match,” said Raider girls golf coach Trent Jeffrey after the huge 42-stroke rout of the Pirates. “We were playing without Carly Byers and Kathleen McNamara and had to have some other girls step up and wow, did they ever.”
Paige Goetz led the hosts firing a meet medalist round of 49 while Jordan Bickford and Emily Davis each added rounds of 50 to claim meet runner-up medalist honors. Ryann Pratt came through with a card of 59 to count to the varsity score.
DeeDee Rowley led Raider JV golfers with a 53 as Anamosa’s JV team rolled to a 229-274 triumph over the Pirates. Morgan Tjaden added a 54 while Erin Ridgeway shot a 60 and Kailey Strother a 62 for the hosts.
Anamosa’s winning ways continued Tuesday, April 11, with an impressive 198-213 victory over Monticello at the Fawn Creek Country Club.
Anne Daily carded a medalist round of 47 for the Raiders while Strother bounced back with a solid 49 and claimed runner-up honors with the solid score.
Bickford added a 50 with Davis counting a 52 to the Anamosa effort.
Goetz fired a 59 while Byers made her way through the chilly and windy conditions with a 61.
The Raider JV team also posted a 236-252 win over the Panthers.
Tjaden claimed JV medalist honors with a 56 while Rowley fired a 57. Ridgeway scored a 58 with Pratt carding a 65 for the hosts.
Anamosa traveled to Eldridge and competed in the annual North Scott Invitational Thursday, April 13, where they placed second in the eight-team tournament with a sensational 393 score at the 18-hole event.
Davenport Assumption claimed the team title with a 370 score while the Raiders topped Dubuque Senior (401), Maquoketa (401), Dubuque Wahlert (407), North Scott (412), Monticello (419) and Central DeWitt (454).
Davis led all Raider golfers and was fifth overall at the tourney with a 93 (49-44) while Strother tied for 10th overall with a 97 (51-46). Daily carded a 101 (50-51) while Goetz turned in the final counting score with a 102 (50-52). Bickford (58-57) and Ridgeway (55-61) tallied rounds of 105 and 116 for the Anamosa team. |
No longer just a matter of time

ANAMOSA — He’s been saying it all spring long to this point.
Anamosa boys soccer coach Dr. Mike Weston knew it was just going to be a matter of time before his team broke loose and would not only score a goal, but would also find their swagger and collect a win.
Both of those things happened Monday, April 10.
“This wasn’t exactly a breakout type performance more than it was a gritty, gutty win, but a win is a win and we’ll take it,” said Weston after his team scored a 1-0 triumph at Marion. “We took advantage of the wind blowing behind us in the second half and did what we had to do to win.”
Tyler George took a pass from Kevin Williams with a little less than three minutes remaining in the contest and fired a shot past the Indian goalie for the winning score, the first of the season for Anamosa (2-3).

“The first three games of the season we generated very little in the way of offense,” said Weston. “We had been shut out three times in a row and that was something we hadn’t experiences in quite some time. We knew it was just a matter of time before our offense began to kick things into gear and in this match, especially in the second half, it did.”
The Raiders ripped a total of 12 shots the the Marion goal while sensational play on the Anamosa defensive and mid-field kept the Indians almost without a shot over the game’s final 40 minutes.
“Marion only got a couple of shots in the second half,” said Weston.
“This is a big win. The guys showed a lot of heart and their teamwork was outstanding.”
Noah Worcester and George each ripped four shots at the Indian goal while Williams, Stefan Watermann, Sean Corpstein and Ben Yanda all added one shot each to the effort.
Cody Bickford made seven saves tending the Anamosa net.
The Raider JV team also posted a win coming away with a 2-0 victory over the Indians.
Corpstein scored seven minutes into the second half to start the scoring while Bickford added another Anamosa JV goal 17 minutes into the second half scoring off his own ricocheted shot off the post.

“Our JV defense continues to play very well,” said Weston. “Nile Price, Curtis Williams, Robert Young, Taylor Coons and Mark Hoyer all did a great job defending for us.”
Corpstein led the offense with five shots while Luis Ramirez and Kyle Gerber added three more each. Mitch Nissen and Bickford tallied one shot each.
Casey Krapfl made one save tending visitors’ net.
The Raiders returned home Thursday, April 13, and scored a 4-1 triumph playing what Weston called his team’s best effort of the season-to-date.
“This is the kind of soccer we’ve been expecting to see all year long,” he said. “We played with the kind of energy, enthusiasm and determination we had last year and hopefully this can keep going.” |

Actually it was the Hawks who dented the scoreboard first tallying a goal barely two minutes into the contest, but the rest of the match would belong to the Raiders.
Worcester scored the first of his two goals 15 minutes into the first half then added another 20 minutes later giving the hosts a lead they would not lose.
Leading 2-1 at the half, Watermann scored for Anamosa just 13 seconds into the second half and added another 16 minutes later to end the scoring.
Overall the Raiders ripped a whopping 18 shots at Hawk keepers led by Worcester’s five. George added four more with Watermann and Ryan McLearnon chipping in with three.
Anamosa’s dominating defense kept the West Delaware offense almost stagnant as Bickford was needed for just one save tending the host net in the win.
“We got everyone in so this was a full team effort winning this one,” said Weston. “I hope we will build off this type of performance.”
The Raider JV team posted a 2-0 triumph as well as Ramirez scored a pair of goals for the hosts, the second coming on a Bryce Engelbart assist. |

WYOMING — The cream of the crop rose to the top Monday, April 10, as the host Eagles claimed a title hosting their own Midland co-ed golf tournament.
Midland’s Riley Williams and Ashley Coon as well as Gavin Wherry and Maisie Woodward tied for the top spot in the girl/boy alternating shot style tournament with rounds of 47 each. After the card-back it was determined Williams and Coon took the overall medalist award.
The host Eagles ran away with the tournament title scoring a 195 team score to top runner-up Calamus-Wheatland by eight shots. Lisbon was third with a 226 while North Cedar rounded out the four-team co-ed tournament with a 243.
Also counting for the Eagle team were Mitch Boots and Katie Andresen who together carded a 50 while Geoff Dammann and Katie Leonard turned in the final counting score for the hosts with a 51. |

Also making their way through the Little Bear Country Club course were Jordan Oberbreckling and Amy Woodward who combined for a round of 55 while Nick Short and Carlin McCreedy turned in a card of 66.
Olin’s Zach Brecht and Midland’s Brandi Larkey teamed up to fire a round of 52.
The Eagle boys traveled to Bellevue Tuesday, April 11, and were edged in a 176-184 final against the host Comets.
“We played well but we just didn’t play well enough to win,” said Midland boys golf coach Phil Schult. “Riley couldn’t pull off any hole-in-one magic this year but still fired a team-low round of 42.”
Led by Williams and his six-over-par runner-up medalist round, the Eagles also saw Oberbreckling (44), Dammann (48) and Wherry (50) count for the varsity score.
“We worked with Jordan quite a bit this past week,” said Schult. “Just trying to get solid contact in his ball striking. It was good to see him play better this week.”
Boots (51) and Cody Dirks (56) also made their way through the Bellevue golf course. |
