Anamosa continues sensational start
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor

ANAMOSA — So far this season, the only losses the Anamosa girls golf team has suffered has been in tournament action, so when the Raiders hosted Central City for a dual meet and the Wapsi Country Club Friday, April 21, the Wildcats knew they were in for a rough day.

And they were!

“This has been one amazing run we’ve been on this season and hopefully we can just keep this rolling all the way through,” said Raider girls golf coach Trent Jeffrey after his team annihilated Central City by a whopping 30 strokes. “Believe it or not, but the girls were very, very upset with themselves after this performance against Central City. Yes, we won by 30 strokes and were never threatened at all in the match, but this group has some goals set and when they feel they didn’t reach one of those goals or didn’t play to the best of their abilities, they get mad and are willing to put in the work to get things corrected.”

Anamosa outlasted Central City by a 210-240 count at a challenging par-33 Wapsi Country Club on a beautiful day for golf.

“We’ve been shooting more closer to the 200 and below range this season and when the girls came in with that 210 score, they didn’t feel good even though this was a big win,” said Jeffrey. “That says a lot about this group of girls right there.”

Paige Goetz led all golfers on the course firing a medalist round of 48 for the hosts while Kailey Strother, Emily Davis and Anne Daily all tied for meet runner-up medalist honors with cards of 54 each to round out the varsity scoring for the Raiders. Jordan Bickford and Erin Ridgeway added rounds of 56 and 57, respectively for Anamosa.

“Having six scores in the 50’s or lower is something we haven’t had here in a while,” said Jeffrey. “I’m excited to watch what this team can accomplish.”

The Raiders traveled to Williamsburg for an 18-hole tournament Wednesday, April 19, and took second in the four-team invitational firing a 384 team score.

“The girls are totally stepping up when we hit the road,” said Jeffrey.

“They’re really thriving on the challenge of playing away from the comforts of home and had another excellent tournament against some pretty good schools.”

Four of the six Anamosa golfers won medals at the meet that featured medalist and runner-up awards in each group.

Davis led all Raider golfers with her round of 94 (45-49) which sealed runner-up honors in her group while Kathleen McNamara added a 95 (49-46) and also claimed the runner-up award.

Strother tallied a 95 (46-49) while Goetz came through with a 100 (46-54) and won runner-up medalist honors in her group.

Bickford shot a 105 (50-55) winning runner-up honors with Ridgeway rounding out the Raider scoring with a 123 (57-66).

Muscatine won the tournament team title with a 372 card while Anamosa topped the host Raiders (391) and Clear Creek-Amana (394) on the day.

The Raider girls hosted Maquoketa Valley at the Fawn Creek Country Club Tuesday, April 18, and rolled to a 201-268 rout of the Wildcats.

McNamara led all golfers on the course with a 47 while Carly Byers and Strother shared runner-up awards with rounds of 51 each.
Bickford added a round of 52 to count for the varsity.

Goetz led the Anamosa JV girls to a 219-309 blowout of Maquoketa Valley carding a 53. Ridgeway added another 53 while Davis (54) and Ryann Pratt (59) also counted for the JV girls in the 90-stroke rout.

The busy week began Monday, April 17, as Anamosa traveled to Center Point-Urbana where they rolled once again in dual tournament action pulling out a big 201-240 victory.

Bickford added a 52 while Daily made her way through the CP-U course with a 55.

Anamosa’s JV team also routed the Pointers in a 217-281 final.

Lauren Herren (53), Pratt (53), Ridgeway (55) and Heather Sams (56) all counted for the visitors in the 64-stroke win.

Raider soccer powers past Pointers

ANAMOSA — Nostradamus couldn’t have predicted the sudden rise of the 2006 Anamosa boys soccer season any more accurately that Raider coach Dr. Mike Weston did recently.

Earlier this spring, Weston knew it was going to be just a matter of time before his club broke loose and more exactly, his offense, and did they ever have a school-record breakthrough performance Thursday, April 20!

Anamosa’s offense, which has gradually been building more and more confidence as the season has gone along, grew to record proportions hosting Center Point-Urbana taking a huge 9-0 rout over the Pointers.

“Our passing was aggressive and our offense attacked their defense making life on their keepers pretty tough all game long,” said Weston after the Raiders rolled to the lopsided school-record shutout rout.

(Journal-Eureka photo by Daryl Schepanski)

“In the first half we had quite a few missed opportunities and we felt like we should have held a much larger lead than we did, but in the second half we made up for that.”

Anamosa (5-3) played sensational soccer all match long against the Pointers piling up an amazing 20 shots overall.

“Earlier this season we were getting some decent looks at the goal but just weren’t able to finish,” said Weston. “We’re doing a much better job of finishing now. We knew our offense was going to come around eventually, but I guess no one ever expects a game like this.”

Even with the ball on the Raiders’ offensive end much of the first 40 minutes of play, the hosts led just 2-0 at the halftime break thanks to a pair of impressive Tyler George goals.

“Tyler took advantage of CP-U’s aggressive goalie by being pretty aggressive himself,” said Weston. “He got us going.”

George ripped his first goal into the left corner just inside the post and inches away from the goalie while his second tally, which came 12 minutes after his first at the 23 minute mark of the first half, came off a beautiful pass from teammate Stefan Watermann.

“Stefan was coming down the side and the CP-U defense closed in on him and he timed his pass perfectly to Tyler in the middle and their goalie had no chance of stopping it,” said Weston. “You couldn’t draw that play up any better than the way Stefan and Tyler executed it.”

The second half saw those missed opportunities in the first 40 minutes come to fruition.

Just five minutes into the final half, Cameron Weston scored the first of his two goals off a George assist and seven minutes later George completed his hat-trick recording his third goal of the contest giving the Raiders a commanding 4-0 advantage.

Noah Worcester found the back of the Pointer net at the 22-minute mark of the second half and three minutes later Watermann added another. Six minutes after that, Weston added yet another goal, this one off a Dan Dawson assist.
Watermann and Kevin Williams finished the Anamosa scoring ripping shots into the CP-U net at the 32 and 38 minute marks, respectively with Weston and Dawson adding assists.

When the dust had cleared, George had three goals while Watermann and Weston each added two more. Worcester and Williams each scored once.

Weston led the shot parade with six while Watermann added four more. George scored on all three of his shots while Worcester tallied three more. Williams had two with Ben Yanda and Dawson each chipping in with one shot.
The Raider JV team posted a 3-0 shutout as Luis Ramirez, Adam Eilers and Robert Young all scored goals.

Anamosa’s offense tallied 13 shots in the victory led by Ramirez with three. Jordan Fliehler, Young and Kyle Gerber all ripped two shots at the CP-U goal while Mitch Nissen, Eilers, Jordan Luckstead and Bryce Engelbart came through with one shot each.

Anamosa traveled to Monticello Saturday, April 22, competing in their first soccer tournament where they claimed the championship after a 3-2 overtime triumph over CP-U.

The Raiders led 2-0 at the half thanks to goals from Watermann and Worcester but the Pointers were up to the challenge just two days after their huge loss against Anamosa knotting the score and forcing overtime.

In the five-minute extra session, Weston blasted a shot into the net off a Worcester assist just two minutes in to end the contest and hand the Raiders the Monticello tournament title.

“CP-U came out and played hard,” said Weston. “They threw everything they had at us. They wanted to show they were a better team than the one we played Thursday and we had our hands full all game long.”

Weston’s three shots led a nine-shot attack against the Pointers as Worcester, Watermann and George all added two shots to the effort.

Anamosa opened the tournament against the host Panthers and posted a 3-1 triumph.

After Worcester scored a pair of first half goals at the 12 and 30 minutes marks, the Raiders led 2-0 at the half. George added another goal for the visitors just five minutes into the second half giving Anamosa a 3-0 advantage before Monticello scored on a corner kick four minutes later.

Cody Bickford played sensational tending the Raider goal stopping a Panther direct kick and overall made four saves.

Worcester led the eight-shot offense with three kicks at the Monticello net while George and Weston added two more each.

“Monticello is a good team and have made some real strides the past couple of years,” said Weston. “But our defense stepped up and met the challenge. Ben Yanda and Ryan Mclearnon played very hard for us all game long.”

Anamosa competes well at co-ed meets
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor

TIPTON — The word is out about Anamosa sophomore high jumper Colten Kelly and even with expectations and hundreds of eyes weighing on him at the Tipton co-ed track meet Tuesday, April 18, the sophomore star still tied a meet record in the event for the Raiders.

“He’s really gotten off to a pretty amazing start to the season setting or tying records wherever he’s been,” said Anamosa boys track coach Wes Wilson after Kelly claimed the Tipton co-ed high jump title flying over the bar set at 6’ 3’’.
“He had 6’ 5’’ cleared several times but kept kicking the bar with his feet as he flew over. We’re still working with him on his form and hopefully will have him jumping his best at the Drake Relays Thursday night. We don’t want to mess with his form too much though. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, but there are a few things we can tweak to try and make Colten an even better high jumper.”

Jason Breon also scored points for the Raiders in the high jump after placing third with a solid 5’ 10’’ effort.

“Jason has also been scoring consistently for us in the high jump,” said Wilson. “He and Colten have been a nice 1-2 combination. If he can keep improving he can give himself a shot at state once districts roll around.”

Steve Siver ran third in the 400 meter dash posting a time of 53.99 while the medley team of Breon, Nathan Kaufman, Greg Vernon and Mitch Kelly were also third after their 4:04.98 clocking.

“I was very happy with the way our medley team ran,” said Wilson. “That was a season-best time for them and if they bring that time down just a bit more, there’s another event that could do something at districts.”

Nate Vaughn continued his strong showings in the 1600 meter run placing fourth at Tipton after a 4:46.61 effort while he also added a sixth place showing in the 800 meter run after a 2:08.98 clocking.

Kyle Kilburg ran an 11.92 clocking in the 110 high hurdles and was fourth in the event while Siver added a fifth-place finish in the 200 meter dash crossing the finish line with a time of 24.48 for the Raiders.

Tucker Vondracek flew fifth in the long jump clearing 18’ 9’’ while Josh English scored fifth-place points in the discus after his 125’ 3’’ effort in the event.

Anamosa’s 4x100 team of Kilburg, Siver, Breon and Vondracek were sixth with a time of 47.19 while Vernon, Nate Vaughn, Dan Bierbrodt and Brady Vaughn ran the 4x400 team to a sixth-place finish in 3:54.56.

Anamosa continued their co-ed experience at Monticello Thursday, April 20, and placed in all but five events led by Nate Vaughn and his sensational performances in the 3200 and 1600 meter races.

Vaughn broke the string running the 3200 run for the first time posting a time of 10:28.54 and did the same winning the Monticello co-ed 1600 meter title after his 4:47.64 clocking bested the talented field.

“Nate really stepped up and met the challenge here,” said Wilson. “Those are two tough races to run and he not only did them both, but won them both. He’s a true competitor.”

Vaughn also ran the 800 meters and placed fifth with a time of 2:07.46.

Colten Kelly set yet another meet record in the high jump clearing 6’ 4’’ to claim yet another title while Breon jumped fifth in the event after his 5’ 10’’ effort.

Siver ran a personal-best 53.79 in the 400 meter dash and with the clocking claimed second in the event while he also ran third in the 200 meter dash finishing in 23.93.

Vondracek flew to a third-place showing in the long jump after his 19’ 2’’ leap and Aaron Beadle also added field event points scoring fifth in the shot put after a solid 42’ 11 1/2’’ toss.

Kenny Beadle ran fourth in the 1600 meters posting a personal-best time of 5:05.40.

“That might have been the biggest surprise at the meet for us,” said Wilson. “Kenny dropped 25 seconds off his time.”

Kilburg, Siver, Breon and Vondracek ran the 4x100 team to a third-place finish in 47.27 while the medley team of Kilburg, Breon, Vernon and Mitch Kelly was sixth with a time of 4:01.83.

Vondracek placed in the 100 meter dash event after crossing the finish line with a time of 12.15 which was good enough for sixth in the event.

As a team the Raider boys placed a sensational third at the meet scoring 56 points tying with Western Dubuque for the spot.

Center Point-Urbana won the boys’ title scoring 88.5 points while North Linn was runner-up with 60 points at the 12-team meet.

The Raiders topped teams from North Cedar (35 points), Monticello (31), Preston (26), Ed-Co (22.5), Alburnett (22), East Buchanan (18), Cascade (15) and Central City (11).

Looking for a little offense
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor

CEDAR RAPIDS — An improved effort from an Anamosa girls soccer team gaining more and more in the way of confidence and experience was on display at Cedar Rapids Prairie Monday, April 24, and even in a 4-0 setback against the host Hawks, Raider coach Jim Conklin was more than pleased with his team’s performance.

“We still have to improve our passing and traps, but this was a much better game than ones we’ve had recently on both the offensive and defensive ends,” said Conklin. “We had midfield control and overall I was just pleased with the way the girls went out and competed.”

Anamosa (0-5) trailed 2-0 at the half against the powerful Cedar Rapids Prairie club but did manage an impressive 10 shots offensively led by Bryn Gerber who ripped a whopping eight of her own at the Hawk keeper.

Kandis Bieber added two more shots for the visitors.

Raider goal tenders were busy making a total of 21 saves as Rachelle Bahl tallied six during her tenure as keeper and Anne Daily another 15.

Anamosa hosted Center Point-Urbana Tuesday, April 18, and were handed a rough 7-1 setback.

“Right now we’re just looking for a little offense,” said Conklin. “We’re struggling getting good looks and finishing and are in the process of making some changes in an attempt to try and improve our chances offensively.”

Trailing 2-0, Gerber scored for the hosts on a direct kick mid way through the first half.

Gerber’s six shots at the Pointer goal accounted for the entire Raider offense in the match.

Bahl made two saves tending the Anamosa goal while Daily came through with another five during her stint covering the net.

Anamosa taking strides on the track
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor

TIPTON — Throwing events continue to be a strength for the Anamosa girls track team and Tuesday, April 18, at Tipton, the Raiders proved themselves once again as Liz McAtee and Cassie Beadle scored points for Anamosa in both the discus and shot put events.

“Those two have been consistent scorers for us all spring and I don’t see that letting up any time soon,” said Raider girls track coach Wes Wilson after the Anamosa girls competed at the Tipton co-ed meet on a beautiful night for the event. “Both Liz and Cassie placed in the shot and the discus. That’s pretty impressive especially considering the amount of teams that were at this meet.”

Teams from Bellevue, Calamus-Wheatland, Camanche, Monticello, Northeast, North Cedar, Preston/East Central and Tipton competed as the host Tigers ran away with their own meet title.

Beadle came through with a runner-up showing in the shot put event for the Raiders with her 33’ 6’’ effort while McAtee was third in the same event after a solid 33’ 5 3/4’’ toss.

McAtee claimed fifth-place in the discus unleashing a 95’ 6’’ effort and teammate Beadle scored sixth-place points coming through with an 86’ 7’’ toss.

The Raider girls also scored in a pair of running events at the Tipton co-ed meet as Kandis Bieber tallied a time of 13:09 running the challenging 3000 meter run placing fifth in the event.

“That was her first time running that very tough race and she did a pretty nice job,” said Wilson of Bieber’s effort. “Getting fifth in that field was an accomplishment, especially considering it was her first time. She’s got some potential there, that’s for sure.”

Dole also scored points finishing fifth after running the 800 meters for the first time ever posting a solid time of 2:39.62.

“We’re trying Cammy in quite a few events,” said Wilson. “She can do so many things so well, we just need to decide which events suit her best and will give her the best shot once districts come around.”

The Raider girls also competed at the Monticello co-ed meet Thursday, April 20, and were sixth in the nine-team meet scoring 34 points.

McAtee led Anamosa with her championship winning performance in the shot put unleashing a 35’ 6 3/4’’ toss while Beadle was runner-up in the event after her 32’ 8 3/4’’ effort.

Field event points kept coming as Whitney Comried placed third in the long jump after flying 15’ 1’’.

Dole placed third in the 400 meter dash crossing the finish line with a time of 2:03.27 and the 2005 state cross country qualifier also scored in the 200 meter dash after her 27.67 clocking was good enough for third as well.

The host Panthers claimed their own co-ed girls title scoring 84 points overall while Center Point-Urbana was runner-up with 81 points.

MANCHESTER — Typically, the Manchester Country Club is a place where the Anamosa boys golf team has fared very well in the past.

Saturday, April 22, was no different as the Raiders claimed an individual championship as well as a runner-up team showing at the extremely tough West Delaware Invitational.

“Considering our lack of experience, I was very happy with the way this tournament went for us,” said Raider boys golf coach Brad Mangler after his team fired a 326 score at the 18-hole tournament and finished 11 strokes behind team champion West Delaware A. “We had three kids golfing for us who have never teed it up on this course before, or at least in a competitive high school meet anyway, and considering that we did better than I expected we would.”

Not only did the Raiders finish a solid second at the tournament, but Shawn Parmenter also brought home an individual title for Anamosa after carding a brilliant one-over par round of 73 (37-36).

“Shawn is really in a great groove right now and just seems to be getting better and better,” said Mangler. “He won this tournament going away.”

Parmenter’s closest competitor was Monticello’s Matt Wennekamp who was three strokes back carding a 76 (38-38).

The Hawks’ A team fired a 315 team score to top the Raiders while Monticello, Waterloo Columbus and Western Dubuque all tied for third with team cards of 329. Ed-Co (331), Maquoketa (333), Independence (334), West Delaware B (338), Center Point-Urbana (348) and Vinton-Shellsburg (353) rounded out the team scoring at the tournament.

Derek Hart added a round of 83 (42-41) for the Raiders while Colten Kelly (38-47) and Tyler Parmenter (45-40) counted for the Anamosa team with cards of 85 each.

Dillon Eggers made his way through the Manchester Country Club course with an 86 (44-42) while Adam Andreesen added a 97 (49-48).

“We had no Drew (Corpstein) and Colten, Tyler and Adam had never golfed the course before so we really stepped it up placing second at a tournament like this one,” said Mangler. “Our boys just went out and competed all day long.”

Anamosa also competed in tournament action at Williamsburg Wednesday, April 19, and finished second in a four-team invitational firing a 321 team score.

“Well, I guess when the only team that can beat us is the No. 1 ranked team in class 2A, that’s not too bad,” said Mangler of champion Mid-Prairie who carded a tournament-best 314 team card and won the title by seven shots over the Raiders. “This was a very windy day to golf and the conditions made things pretty tough.”

Five of the six Anamosa golfers to hit the par-71 Williamsburg course won medals at the tournament that awarded medalist and runner-up medalist awards in each group.

Shawn Parmenter led all Raider golfers and claimed a runner-up medal with his 78 (38-40) round at the 18-hole tournament while Hart fired a solid 79 (42-37) and was runner-up medalist in his group.

Corpstein added an 80 (42-38) winning runner-up honors while Eggers claimed a medalist award after his 87 (39-48) was tops in his group.

Tyler Parmenter added yet another runner-up medal for the Raiders after an 87 (42-45) while Lenny Rhomberg, playing in his first varsity tournament for Anamosa, fired a 105 (51-54).

The Raider boys returned home Friday, April 21, and posted a 158-169 triumph over visiting Central City at the Wapsi Country Club.

Shawn Parmenter topped all golfers on the par-33 course with a 35 while Eggers added a runner-up medalist score with a 37. Hart (43) and Tyler Parmenter (43) also counted for the hosts. Andreesen (44) and Kelly (46) also hit the course for the Raiders.

Anamosa’s JV team posted an easy 184-213 triumph over the Wildcats as Rhomberg and Eric Luchtenberg paced all JV golfers with cards of 45. Deg Reynolds (47) and Ben Antons (47) also scored for the Raiders.

Anamosa traveled to Maquoketa Valley Tuesday, April 18, and cruised to a 168-193 rout of the Wildcats.

Shawn Parmenter won medalist with a 41 while Eggers claimed runner-up also firing a 41. Hart (42) and Corpstein (44) also counted for the varsity.

Andreesen led the Anamosa JV team to a 184-215 win carding a 43 while Luchtenberg (45), Max Etten (48) and Reynolds (48) also counted.

The road shows began at Center Point-Urbana Monday, April 17, and behind a medalist round of 36 from Eggers, the Raiders rolled to a 160-181 rout.

Shawn Parmenter won runner-up honors with a 38 while Hart (43), Kelly (43) and Tyler Parmenter (43) all tied for the final varsity counting score.

The Raider JV team was handed just their first defeat of the season in a 187-190 setback.

Luchtenberg (41), Andreesen (49), Reynolds (50) and Etten (50) counted for the JV boys on the windy day.
