MANCHESTER — Last year’s memories of disappointment during what was a mostly sensational season for the 2005 Anamosa boys golf team after the Tri-Rivers Conference meet were washed away Monday, May 1.
Literally.
Last year the Raider boys were heavy favorites to win the league crown, as they had done in 2004, and heading into this year’s conference get together at a soggy Manchester Country Club, Anamosa again was considered the Tri-Rivers Conference favorite and this time the Raiders came through with the crown.
“It wasn’t easy by any stretch of the imagination but the guys got it done and are very happy to once again be Tri-Rivers Conference golf champions,” said Anamosa boys golf coach Brad Mangler.
|
“We didn’t shoot our best scores and weren’t playing our best golf, but we found a way to pull this one out, somehow.”
Anamosa and East Buchanan tied for the top spot after the 18-hole tournament as each club posted scores of 324 at the 12-team conference tournament.
“After the top four players were counted on each side we tied with East Buchanan and then the tie-breaking process went down to the fifth score from each team,” said Mangler. “Dillon (Eggers) shot an 84 for us while their No. 5 kid (Alex Riniker) had an 85. That gave us the championship.”
Team championships weren’t the only titles Raiders were shooting for on the day as Shawn Parmenter was looking to claim the Tri-Rivers individual golf crown as well.
“Shawn, like he has done all year long for us, played a great round of golf right when we needed it,” said Mangler. “He went into a two-hole playoff against Cascade’s Justin Weber and East Buchanan’s Colin McKeon and came out second overall.”
Parmenter, Weber and McKeon, who all tallied rounds of 75, opened their playoff on the first hole with Weber posting a par while Parmenter and McKeon (38-37) both scored bogies. After another Weber par on the second playoff hole (No. 9), Weber (38-37) had the individual crown.
Parmenter was sizzling to start the tournament shooting one of just two even-par 36 rounds through the first nine holes. The Raider senior added a 39 on the back coming through with a par on the 18th and final hole of regulation to get into the playoff while Weber, who played in Parmenter’s group, bogied the final hole.
“Shawn has been our Mr. Consistency all season long,” said Mangler. “He had a couple of bad breaks in the playoff but has nothing to hang his head about shooting a 75 and leading us to this team title.”
Parmenter was the lone Anamosa golfer to earn all-Tri Rivers Conference honors claiming a spot on the league’s first-team as Derek Hart, Tyler Parmenter and Drew Corpstein all just missed out on second-team awards in a playoff.
Parmenter, Weber, McKeon, Maquoketa Valley’s Mark Beatty (77) as well as Ed-Co’s Spencer Smith (80) and Kyle Domeyer (80) all claimed first-team all-conference honors.
North Linn’s Ryan Mulnix (81), Ed-Co’s Chase Forkenbrock (81), Central City’s Brian Nelson (81), East Buchanan’s Adam Myrton (82), Monticello’s Zach Utter (82) and East Buchanan’s Joe Zhiss (83) all earned second-team all-Tri Rivers golf honors.
Zhiss edged Hart (44-39), Tyler Parmenter (44-39) and Corpstein (40-43) in the playoff for the final spot on the all-conference second-team.
“Having our freshman come through and post an 83 at a big tournament like this one was big,” said Mangler of Tyler Parmenter’s card of 83 at the conference tournament. “I know Derek and Drew were a little disappointed with their scores of 83 and had hoped to shoot a little lower and get onto the all-conference teams but if it weren’t for their scores, we wouldn’t have won the team title either.”
Eggers’ opening nine hole included a 46 but his 38 over the final nine holes of the tournament proved to be huge in Anamosa claiming their second league title in three years.
“Dillon wasn’t too happy with his round either but there sure were a lot of smiles on the kids’ faces after it was determined we won the title though,” said Mangler. “Things got a little tense as the scores were coming in. It looked like we had the title won by a stroke then they found an error adding up East Buchanan’s scores and all of a sudden we were tied then Dillon’s 84 proved to be the difference in the end. This was a close one and we sure weren’t on our A game, but good teams find a way to work through and we escaped in this one.”
Colten Kelly also made his way through the overcast, chilly and soggy day for the Raiders at the tournament firing a 92 (49-43).
Ed-Co finished third overall in the league carding a team score of 328 while Monticello was fourth with a 333. Cascade’s 333 was good enough for fifth in the conference while Center Point-Urbana (350), North Linn (351), Central City (359), Maquoketa Valley (368), Starmont (383), Alburnett (395) and Springville (438) rounded out the Tri-Rivers tournament scoring.
“Our goal coming into this tournament was to win it,” said Mangler. “It may not have been as pretty as we would have liked, but we’ll take this and learn from it too. Our seniors are going to be huge for us the rest of the way and we’re going to need some low scores, in the 70’s preferably, if we’re going to keep this run going through sectionals and districts. We want to be shooting closer to the 320 range and lower then we’d feel much more comfortable about our chances.”
The Raiders hosted North Linn Tuesday, April 25, at the Fawn Creek Country Club and rolled past the Lynx in a 161-175 final.
“Other than the Parmenter boys, we did not play well in this match,” said Mangler. “The conditions weren’t exactly ideal either, but all in all, this was a very average meet for us.”
Shawn Parmenter led all golfers on the course with a one-over par 37 to claim medalist honors while brother Tyler added a runner-up medalist score with a 39.
Kelly scored with a 42 while Eggers and Corpstein tied for the final varsity counting score with rounds of 43 each.
Hart also made his way through the Fawn Creek course with a 46.
Anamosa’s JV team also cruised to an easy triumph posting a 185-207 rout of North Linn.
Lenny Rhomberg led all JV golfers with a medalist card of 44 while Adam Andreesen (46), Nick McGovern (47) and Deg Reynolds (48) also counted for the Anamosa JV boys.
“The JV guys just continue to win and play some pretty steady golf,” said Mangler. “They were only 10 strokes behind North Linn’s varsity score. That’s not too bad.”
Ben Antons (53) and David Sams (55) also turned in cards for the Raider JV team.
Anamosa traveled to Backbone Country Club Friday, April 28, and crushed host Starmont under a 152-180 count.
“This is a very good score and the kind of golf we need to be playing at this point of the season,” said Mangler. “Backbone is not a tough course to score on but there are some tough greens there.”
Anamosa’s seniors led the way on the day as Shawn Parmenter tallied a medalist 37 while Hart came through with a runner-up 38 score.
Eggers also scored a 38 for the visitors while Corpstein carded a fine 39.
Tyler Parmenter tallied a 41 while Andreesen made his way through the par-36 course with a 44.
The Raider JV team rolled to a 170-213 rout of the Stars.
Rhomberg was sensational tearing up the course and leading all JV golfers with a sizzling medalist round of 38.
“Another very nice score turned in by our JV guys,” said Mangler. “Lenny leading the way once again and a bunch of very consistent scores right behind him.”
McGovern added a 42 for the visitors while Reynolds carded a 43. Sams came through with the final JV counting score with a 47.
Also making their way through the Backbone course for the visitors were Antons (48), Eric Luchtenberg (50), Reid Carrier (51) and Josh Hora (52).
“We have a week and a half off now to work on some things and get ready for sectionals,” said Mangler as the Raider boys will travel to Independence for the tournament Friday, May 14.
“After that long of a break, we’re going to be more than ready.”

ANAMOSA — Already playing with a team full of athletic players and a solid defense, Anamosa girls soccer coach Jim Conklin was hoping for a breakthrough out of his squad in the offensive facet of the game as well.
Friday, April 28, he got exactly what he wanted and then some as the Raider girls soccer team rolled to a resounding rout hosting rival Monticello.
“We completely changed things up on offense and I think the results came out pretty good,” said Conklin who understated the Anamosa girls’ performance in a huge 8-1 rout of the Panthers. “We’re getting to the point now with this team that we can work on specific details of our game and offense was one of those things we’ve needed to address.”

Not only did Anamosa (1-5) score a whopping eight goals against Monticello, but the Raider girls also added an amazing 30 shots at the Panther net.
“Monticello’s defense just had a hard time matching up against us all game long and we took advantage getting a lot of very good looks at their goal,” said Conklin. “Our girls also did a nice job adjusting to their roles in the offense as well.”
Bryn Gerber got the goal scoring-fest started for Anamosa and the junior star never let up scoring an amazing six times recording a double hat-trick on the evening.
“Bryn just kept getting into their defense and kept getting great looks at the net,” said Conklin.
“I guess you could say she was in the zone. Everything was working for her and really everything came together very nicely as a team too.”
Gerber scored the first of her six goals just seven minutes into the contest and teammate Katie Easterly added another at the 19 minute mark giving the hosts a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers found the back of the Raider net just before the half and trimmed the Anamosa lead to 2-1 at the break.
The second half saw the Raider offense explode as Gerber scored an incredible three goals in just an eight minute span to give Anamosa a commanding 5-1 lead.
Bethany Kula scored her first varsity goal for the Raiders at the 21 minute mark of the second half then Gerber came through with the team’s final two goals at the 30 and 33 minute marks.
“What also made me happy was to see so many assists on all those goals,” said Conklin as Gerber tallied one assist while Katie VonMuenster and Katie Easterly tallied two more each.
Lacey Kurth came through with three assists on the evening. “Our passing is getting much better too.”
Gerber led the Anamosa shot onslaught with 15 at the Panther net while Easterly added eight more. VonMuenster fired in four shots for the Raiders while Kula tallied two and Allison Walshire one for the hosts.
Rachelle Bahl tended the Anamosa goal and made five saves while Anne Daily also made five saves during her stint as Anamosa’s goalie.
Monticello’s offense ripped 18 shots overall at Raider keepers in the match. |

MONTICELLO — Running with teams much closer to their own size, the Olin girls posted a solid effort taking part at the annual Eagle Relays held in Monticello Tuesday, April 25.

“We didn’t have anything really stand out at this meet other than Paige (Peterka) setting another school record in the 100 meter hurdles.”
Peterka broke her own school record in the 100 meter hurdles crossing the finish line with a time of 17.25 which was good enough for third in the event while also scoring fourth-place points in the 400 meter hurdle event posting a time of 1:18.58.
