Anamosa boys post big win over Alburnett on the course

ANAMOSA— While the conditions weren’t exactly ideal for Anamosa boys golf fans watching their team host Alburnett at an extremely cold and windy Wapsi Country Club Tuesday, April 10, the play of the Raiders themselves wrapped a warm feeling around all in attendance as the hosts rolled to a whopping 51-stroke rout of the Pirates.
“I can’t complain too much about a 51-stroke win in weather like this,” said Raider boys golf coach Brad Mangler as his team not only had to deal with near freezing temperatures, but also 20-30 mile-per-hour gusts that made play treacherous in the 167-218 victory. “Normally the score we posted wouldn’t be considered too good for Wapsi, but when you factor in what we had to deal with, it’s not too bad.”
Kalib Seeley continued his strong play for the Anamosa boys posting a meet medalist score of 40 while Max Etten added a runner-up medalist score of 41 for the varsity team.
“Kalib has been coming through with some solid rounds for us this year,” said Mangler. “Max continues to play well and turn in good scorecards too. If we can get a couple of other scores down there in the low-40’s and high 30’s, we’ll be a tough team to deal with.”
Lenny Rhomberg and Tyler Parmenter tied for the final counting score for the Raiders each making their way through the Wapsi Country Club course with rounds of 43. |

Digging deep

Colten Kelly added a 44 while Deg Reynolds finished with a 55 rounding out the varsity scores.
The Anamosa JV team also tallied an easy victory routing the Pirates with a 170-205 final.
“There aren’t too many times you see your JV team out-shoot the varsity but for Alburnett that happened,” said Mangler. “And it almost happened for us too. Mitch Kelly and Adam Andreesen didn’t seem to have too much trouble with the conditions and played very nice rounds. Mitch actually had the best score of the day.”
Mitch Kelly led all golfers on the course with a sizzling 39 that warmed up the team while Andreesen added a 40 to take JV runner-up medalist honors.
Drew Carrier scored a 45 for the Anamosa JV team while Tyler Weers counted with a solid 46. Josh Hora (48) and David Sams (51) also took to the course for the Raiders.

“All-in-all a good day for us with the scores we turned in,” said Mangler. “Always nice to get that first win of the season under our belt too.”
Anamosa traveled to Monticello Friday, April 13, and against a good Panther team were handed a 166-174 defeat.
“We just struggled all day long,” said Mangler. “The weather wasn’t a factor but our course knowledge was. Most of the guys haven’t ever played the Monticello course and they were unsure of where to shoot at times. That made a difference in the end.”
Seeley and Etten led the Raiders with rounds of 43 each while Mitch Kelly and Parmenter each turned in cards of 44.
Colten Kelly and Rhomberg made their way through the Monticello course with rounds of 48.
“We shot some pretty consistent scores but unfortunately, they were just too consistently high,” said Mangler. “Monticello counted a 37 and that made a big difference. We just couldn’t match that.”
Monticello’s Zach Utter led all golfers with the 37 while teammate Seth Ballou was meet runner-up medalist firing a 41.Anamosa’s JV team continued their sensational play rolling to yet another win posting a 180-212 rout of the Panthers.
“Once again, our JV team almost caught the varsity,” said Mangler. “Deg bounced back after a rough match against Alburnett and shot a nice score to lead not only the JV team, but our team as a whole. Drew continues to play well too.”
Reynolds fired a JV medalist score of 41 while Carrier was runner-up with a solid 44. Weers contributed a 47 while Mason Eilers and Hora tied for the final JV counting score with rounds of 48 each.
The Raiders quickly bounced back and hit the course at Tipton Saturday, April 14, and rebounded with a solid effort placing in a tie for third at the nine-team tournament.
“I was disappointed in our play against Monticello but very pleased with the way we came back less than 24 hours later at this tough tournament,” said Mangler as his club scored a 330 team score at the 18-hole tournament. “We were tied for second after the first nine holes and reacted well to the competition and some pretty tough greens too.”
Seeley (42-40) and Rhomberg (43-39) led Raider golfers with cards of 82 each while Colten Kelly made his way through with an 83 (38-45). Mitch Kelly fired the final counting score with an 89 (39-50).
Etten (46-44) and Parmenter (45-47) added scores of 90 and 92, respectively.
“Colten and Mitch went out and fired a pair of great first-nine scores and Lenny and Kalib finished strong for us,” said Mangler. “DeWitt made the second second-nine push. It was a two-team race at the end with DeWitt and Mount Vernon with us and Wilton made the push for third.”
Central DeWitt carded a 320 to win the tournament by three shots over Mount Vernon. The Raiders and Wilton tied for third with their 330 team cards while Maquoketa (337), North Cedar (337), West Branch (339), West Liberty (362) and the host Tigers rounded out the tournament with a 377.
Mount Vernon’s Chris Kerr led all golfers at the meet firing a 73 (38-35) while West Branch’s Aaron Lynch was runner-up with a 75 (37-38). Wilton’s Erik Grunder was third overall with a 77 (37-40).
“We didn’t have anyone in the tournament top-10 but shot some pretty solid scores,” said Mangler. “This was a good confidence-building tournament for us right when we needed it too.” |

MONTICELLO— It came down to the wire in Monticello for the Anamosa girls golf team Friday, April 13, and even with five of the Raiders six varsity starters being mere sophomores, Anamosa showed their mettle in a 207-210 victory over the Panthers.
“We are a young team,” said Raider girls golf coach Andrew Buck. “But I still had expected we’d play a little better. But most of these girls haven’t played Monticello’s course before and they found some surprises.”
Anne Daily played the tough course like a venerable veteran besting the entire field with a score of 50.
Daily claimed the meet medalist honor while Jordan Bickford settled for the meet runner-up honor on a cardback after firing a 52.
“Anne led the way and handled the par-4’s well,” said Buck. “Jordan and Paige Goetz both played pretty well too for their first time on the course.”
Goetz tallied a 52 while Ryann Pratt turned in the final varsity counting score with a 53.
“I think we’ll start playing a little more focused golf once the weather turns nicer and the girls start enjoying being outside a little more,” said Buck. “It has been a tough spring to get the golf season starter, but we are still right where we want to be, staying ahead of the other conference teams.”
Erin Ridgeway fired a 58 while Morgan Tjaden turned in a 59 for the Raiders. |

Anamosa hosted Maquoketa and Alburnett Tuesday, April 10, and finished second in the triangular with a 189 team score, trimming 28 strokes off their previous round. The Cardinals fired a 185 to win while the Pirates were third with a 259.
Bickford and Goetz led the Raiders with rounds of 46 each while Pratt (48) and Ridgeway (49) also counted for the varsity. |

LISBON— Having started the season hosting a co-ed meet Monday, April 9, the Midland boys golf team hit the road for the first time Tuesday, April 10, traveling to Lisbon and the Hillcrest Country Club where the Eagles posted a narrow 175-178 victory in treacherous weather conditions.
“The weather wasn’t really that much of a factor because it was bad for everyone,” said Midland boys golf coach Lynn Olson. “One disadvantage we had was course knowledge. I think only our two seniors had seen this course before.”
Riley Williams, one of those seniors, claimed meet medalist honors on a cardback over Lisbon’s Cody Wallace as each fired rounds of 40. |
Geoff Dammann added a 43 while Cody Dirks and Trevor Robinson turned in the final varsity counting scores with cards of 45 and 47, respectively.
“Trevor coming in with that 47 and Cody with the 45 were big,” said Olson. “We need our number 3-6 guys to shoot in the low 40’s for us to compete. Riley and Geoff are pretty steady and we don’t want to put too much pressure on them to always have to shoot low scores.”
Midland’s JV team was edged in a 201-207 final.
Scott Willimack (49), Jordan Oberbreckling (50), Nick Short (54) and Derek Denniston (54) all counted for the JV team. |
