Anamosa girls run at pair of co-ed track meets
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor

MONTICELLO— Keyed by solid performances from up and down the Anamosa girls track roster, the Raiders scored 35 points at a challenging Monticello co-ed meet Thursday, April 19, taking eighth overall team-wise at the nine-team invitational.

“Abby Weers had her best meet of the year,” said Anamosa girls track coach Phil Kauder after Weers scored for the Raiders in the discus and shot put events at the meet. “Her hard work is starting to pay off. Kayla Sanborn had her best 400 meter dash of the year and Cammy Dole had her best 200 meter dash of the year. The 4x400 team also ran their best time of the season so far. All in all a pretty good meet for this team against this competition.”

Sanborn ran second in the 400 meter dash crossing the finish line with a time of 1:02.92 while Dole did the same in the 200 meter dash after a solid 27.67 clocking.

Weers scored for the Raider girls in the discus as her 84’ 9 1/2” toss was good enough for third-place points while her 28’ 7” effort in the shot put placed her sixth in the event.

Sanborn also flew to a fourth-place showing in the long jump sailing 15’ 3”.

Becca Loy also scored field event points for Anamosa after clearing the bar set at 4’ 10” in the high jump which was god enough for sixth overall.

Making their presence felt
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor

MONTICELLO— It’s been several years since the Anamosa boys track team has had the numbers to compete on a regular basis in the team-standings race.
At a pair of tough co-ed meets this past week, not only did the Raiders shine with their sensational performances on the track, but also scored plenty of points soaring to a runner-up finish at the Monticello co-ed meet Thursday, April 19.

“We’re been moving higher and higher up the standings,” said Raider boys track coach Wes Wilson. “Our field event scoring has been pretty consistent but now we’re starting to score quite a bit with our running events too. The combination makes for a powerful 1-2 punch and we’re taking advantage.”

Anamosa claimed two titles at Monticello on their way to scoring a whopping 71 points trailing only the host Panthers’ 90-point total.

Colten Kelly continued his dominance in the high jump, soaring 6’ 6” to take the title while teammate Jason Breon added a fourth-place showing in the same event after flying 6’ 0”.

Anamosa’s field event scoring was amazing as the Raiders placed at least third in every event.

Another meet record

Nate Vaughn also crossed the finish line second in the 3200 meter run tallying a time of 10:23.93 and in the 1600 meter run finishing in 4:45.47.

“Nate has done a great job in the distance events for us all season long and nothing changed here,” said Wilson. “To run the 3200 and 1600 and place second in both events says a lot about how hard he runs. He just never quits.”

Brady Vaughn ran third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:05.70 while the 4x800 team of Vernon, Mitch Hewitt, Justin Cook and Brady Vaughn ran third crossing the finish line in 8:49.68.

“I think we’re starting to get noticed for being a pretty good track team,” said Wilson. “I think our performances last week only helped cement that image but we still have a lot of things we can still improve on.”

The Raider boys took part at the Tipton co-ed Tuesday, April 17, and with another solid performance, placed third in the powerful meet scoring 80.5 points.

Kelly claimed the high jump title setting a new meet record flying 6’ 6” to win and barely missed out on soaring 6’ 9” easily clearing the height before tipping the bar with his ankle on the way over.

Breon set a personal-best with his 6’ 2” jump which was good enough for third in the high jump event.

Beadle set a personal-best in the shot put coming through with a sensational 49’ 2” toss to claim the title.

Nate Vaughn won the third championship on the evening for the Raider boys breaking the tape in the 800 meter run crossing with a time of 2:05.96.

Anamosa’s 4x800 team continued their outstanding performances placing second at Tipton as Cook, Hewitt, Brady Vaughn and Nate Vaughn tallied a time of 8:43.40

Kelly flew second in the long jump clearing 20’ while Vondracek was fifth in the event after an 18’ 6 1/4” effort.

The Raiders trailed only champion Iowa City Regina (114) and runner-up Tipton (81) at the meet while defeating Central DeWitt (68.5), Monticello (67), Clear Creek-Amana (59), North Cedar (54), Bellevue (34) and Calamus-Wheatland (0).

Anamosa’s JV team ran at Marion Monday, April 16, and placed in six events with the shuttle hurdle team of Kaleb Kilburg, Charlie Vernon, Hermanstorfer and Ahrendsen winning a title with a time of 1:08.50.

Ryan Husmann, David Wilcox, Hewitt and Kenny Beadle were second in the 4x800 race posting a 9:40.09 clocking.

“It’s been a good week and hopefully we can build from this and get even better,” said Wilson.
“We’ve got some tough tests ahead that should get us ready for our tough district meet. That’s where we want to be running our best.”

Ketelsen competes at prestigous Iowa Musco track meet
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor

IOWA CITY— Some of the best collegiate track athletes from around the country made their way to Iowa City Saturday, April 21, for the University of Iowa’s annual Musco Invitational, and once again former Anamosa High School star Audra Ketelsen proved herself among the elite in the discus and javelin events.

Just a sophomore, Ketelsen unleashed a 136’ 9” effort in the discus event for Marquette University, which was good enough to place eighth in the event for the Golden Eagles.

Ketelsen also took part in the javelin event in Iowa City and also came away with an eighth-place finish after her 120’ 5” heave.

“It’s been a fun year to this point,” said Ketelsen who when she signed on with the Golden Eagles out of Anamosa High School had planned on spending her sophomore season as a red-shirt for Marquette. “That was the plan from the start but the coaches decided to red-shirt a different girl and wanted me to come back again this season.”

With the way Ketelsen finished her first campaign in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, setting a freshman discus school record for Marquette, Golden Eagle coaches wanted to keep Ketelsen’s sensational run going as a sophomore as well.

The plans are now for Ketelsen to red-shirt next spring, but with the way the former Raider continues to excel, even that may be tough.

Ketelsen turned in an outstanding performance in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois Sunday, April 15, competing at the University of Illinois Invitational where she placed second overall in the javelin event after letting loose with a 36.31 meter throw that topped all Marquette throwers at the meet and was topped by only Illinois’ Mariesa Greene’s 41.97 meter effort.

Ketelsen also scored third-place points for the Golden Eagles in the discus event coming through with a 42.36 meter toss.

“I’m very happy where I am right now,” said Ketelsen who has consistently scored points for Marquette this spring in the throws. “I just need to keep improving though. I think I can get better and I’ve got the time to do it too.”

Anamosa boys’ golf play picks up
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor

ANAMOSA — Once again dominating their Tri-Rivers Conference foes during an extremely busy week on the course, the Anamosa boys golf team rolled to wins over Center Point-Urbana, Maquoketa Valley and Central City all at the Fawn Creek Country Club.

Monday, April 16, Anamosa rolled to a 173-186 victory over the Pointers with Tyler Parmenter firing a meet medalist score of 40 to lead all golfers on the course.

Kalib Seeley chipped in with a runner-up 43 as Colten Kelly (44) and Mitch Kelly (46) also counted for the hosts.

“Tyler came through with a nice round,” said Raider boys golf coach Brad Mangler. “We were solid. Not good, not bad, just solid and did what it took for us to win.”

Anamosa’s JV team rolled to a 190-224 rout over CP-U with Adam Andreesen leading the way with a 45. Drew Carrier added a 48 to take JV runner-up medalist honors.

The Raiders were back on the course Tuesday, April 17, and hammered Maquoketa Valley in a 172-205 final.

Parmenter was sensational firing a round of 39 to easily take medalist honors while Seeley tallied a 43 to claim the runner-up award. Lenny Rhomberg also fired a 43 while Mitch Kelly added a 47 for the final varsity counting score.

Deg Reynolds led Raider JV golfers with a solid 45 as Anamosa rolled to a 193-249 rout of the Wildcats.

Tyler Weers (49), Carrier (49) and Mason Eilers (50) all helped the JV Raider team in the 56-stroke blowout.

Anamosa hit the tournament trail Wednesday, April 18, and finished a secure second at the Williamsburg Invitational.

Raider golfers secured three of the six possible medals at the meet with Colten Kelly, Seeley and Rhomberg all coming home with hardware.

Mid-Prairie’s Justin Strabala won the tournament firing a 79 (39-40).
“For the conditions, I was happy with the way the kids played and with the way things played out too,” said Mangler as his team fired a 342 team score trailing only champion Mount Vernon (328) but topped third-place Mid-Prairie (354) and fourth-place Williamsburg (374).

Making it look easy

“Mid-Prairie was at state last year and one of the better teams and we beat them by 12 strokes. We’re coming along and getting more and more consistent. I’d like the scores to be a little consistently lower, but we’re taking steps in that direction.”

Colten Kelly led the Raiders firing an 84 (42-42) while Rhomberg tallied an 85 (47-38). Seeley chipped in with an 86 (45-41) while Parmenter made his way around the Williamsburg course with a 91 (45-46).

Mitch Kelly scored a 92 (43-49) while Max Etten fired a 101 (53-48) to complete the Anamosa scoring at the event.

“For the conditions, this was about as good as I could have hoped for,” said Mangler. “Colten turned in a nice score and Kalib and Lenny have been coming through with some nice rounds too.”

The Raider boys returned home Friday, April 20, once again taking to the Fawn Creek Country Club where they rolled past visiting Central City in a 173-205 final.

“It’s a good thing Central City only had five golfers because for some reason, we just did not show up as a team today,” said Mangler. “Kalib and Lenny turned in some nice scores but everything else was much higher than we’ve normally been seeing. I don’t know if it was just tough for the kids to get up for this match or if it was the fact that it was their fourth match in five days or what, but we were lucky to get out with a win with the way we golfed.”

Seeley was sensational shooting a medalist score of 39 while Rhomberg added a solid 41 for the Anamosa boys.

Colten Kelly turned in a card of 46 to count for the varsity effort while Etten’s 47 also counted.
“Those last two scores are not ones we want to usually have as counting scores,” said Mangler. “But we were able to escape against Central City.”

Mitch Kelly carded a 50 while Parmenter added a 51.

While the Wildcats had no JV team, Anamosa golfers still took to the course with Reynolds leading JV Raiders with a 43. Eilers fired a 44 while Carrier shot a 47 and Weers a 53. Josh Hora and Andreesen each carded 55’s on the day as Anamosa continued their Tri-Rivers dominance.

The competition got a lot tougher Saturday, April 21, for the Raider boys, taking part at the West Delaware Invitational at the Manchester Golf and Country Club.

Anamosa placed fourth in the 11-team meet firing a 344 trailing hosts and champion Hawks’ 323 team score.

“West Delaware was in a league of their own on that day,” said Mangler. “The race was for second-place all along and we were right there in the hunt. Kalib and Lenny did it again leading the way. Overall through, I was impressed with the way we played considering this was the first time a lot of our kids had seen this course.”

Seeley fired the third-best score at the tournament with an 80 (39-41) while Rhomberg secured an 85 (42-43) at the pressure 18-hole tournament.

Parmenter tallied an 86 (39-47) while Colten Kelly turned in the final counting score of the day for the Raiders with a 93 (48-45).

Etten made his way through the 18-hole course with a 102 (57-45) while Mitch Kelly fired a 104 (53-51).

Monticello finished second overall with a 341 while Western Dubuque was third with a 342 team card. The Raiders topped Independence (350), Waverly-Shell Rock (351), Ed-Co (351), Waterloo Columbus (353), Vinton-Shellsburg (3640, Center Point-Urbana (366) and Maquoketa (367).

West Delaware’s Austin Cole led all golfers with a meet medalist round of 75 (37-38).

Anamosa defends Monticello soccer tournament title
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor

MONTICELLO— Feeling just like they were at home, the Anamosa boys soccer team claimed their second straight Monticello tournament soccer championship Saturday, April 21, playing cool, comfortable and confident soccer defeating Cono Christian in the title tilt.

“We’re a confident team right now and the kids did a nice job putting it all together and winning this tournament defending their title,” said Raider boys soccer coach Dr. Mike Weston as Anamosa used a sensational second half to post a 3-1 triumph over Cono Christian in the final. “We didn’t know a whole lot about them coming in but watching them play Monticello we learned they were a very, very fast team. In the first half Cono Christian was beating us to the loose balls and we just seemed a step slow. But in the second half we turned it all around and with the aid of the wind and a quick goal by Krister Vistnes, we were right back in the game.”

Anamosa (4-4) trailed 1-0 against the Warriors, who hail from Walker as Cono Christian scored a mere five minutes into the contest.

The second half started with the Raiders taking the wind advantage and Vistnes wasted little time taking just eight seconds to score the game-tying goal.

Sean Corpstein took the opening tip and passed to Cameron Weston who found Vistnes open and before Cono Christian even knew what was going on, the score was tied 1-1.

“It was just that fast,” said Weston. “I’ve never seen something like it. Cono Christian was stunned and almost couldn’t believe what they had just seen.”

Weston put the Raiders up for good scoring a goal 13 minutes into the second half off a Vistnes assist. Ryan McLearnon added some insurance for Anamosa scoring 29 minutes into the second half and the Raiders had their 3-1 triumph and back-to-back Monticello tournament titles.

“We had three starters missing and some of the kids had to step up and they did that,” said Weston. “We bounded back from what I thought was our worst first half of the season and played with a lot of pride and passion in the second half.

This team really showed me a lot with the way they responded. They answered the call and got the job done. An excellent all-around effort against a pretty good team too.”

Vistnes and Weston led the 13-shot Raider offense with three shots each.
McLearnon tallied two shots while Mitch Nissen and Corpstein tallied one shot each.

Cody Bickford made 13 saves tending the Raider goal with nine of those coming in the first half.

Anamosa opened the tournament with a 1-0 revenge win over Center Point-Urbana, who just two days earlier had defeated the Raiders in a 1-0 final.

After a scoreless first half, Vistnes blasted a shot past the Pointer keeper for the game’s lone tally just four minutes into the second half.

Anamosa out-shot the Pointers 9-4 with Vistnes pacing the offense with four shots. Max Mueller added three more.

The Raiders traveled to Center Point-Urbana Thursday, April 19, and in a physical battle for 80 grueling minutes, were handed a 1-0 defeat after a scoreless first half.

Three minutes into the second half the Pointers found the back of the Anamosa net for the only score of the contest.

The Raiders actually out-shot CP-U 10-5.

The JV Raider boys handed the host Pointers a 2-0 defeat as Ben Wardlow scored a pair of second half goals to propel the visitors to the triumph.

Wardlow fired in two shots while Josh Fairbanks, Jordan Luckstead and Curtis Williams all tallied one shot each
