Anamosa staying in the soccer hunt
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor

ANAMOSA— There is no doubting the effort, drive and desire put forth by the Anamosa boys soccer team as the Raiders opened the 2007 season playing intense and determined soccer in a pair of narrow 1-0 defeats.

Anamosa (0-2) opened their home campaign Monday, April 2, and against a very talented Hudson team, battled for 80 hard minutes before succumbing to the shutout 1-0 loss.

“We struggled getting a whole lot going on the offensive end all game long but stayed in the contest by playing some pretty spirited defense,” said Raider boys soccer coach Dr. Mike Weston as the two teams battled to a scoreless halftime tie. “Once Hudson scored is when we kind of woke up and started attacking their defense a little better. It just turned out to be too little, too late for us though.”

The Pirates scored the game’s lone goal with 14 minutes remaining in the contest but when faced with the deficit, the Anamosa team raised the stakes of their play and did not go down without a fight.

“We just seemed to play with a better sense of urgency once we got down,” said Weston. “We still didn’t get a whole lot of quality looks at their goal, but at least the ball wasn’t on our defensive end like it was for most of the game.”

Raider keeper Cody Bickford played a sensational contest making 10 saves, including grabbing a penalty kick by the visitors in the first half.

“Cody played a huge game and we really needed it to stay in the hunt to win this one,” said Weston.
“We have some inexperience on the defensive end and Cody not only makes great saves for us as our keeper, but always helps his defense and makes sure they are in the right spots.”
Anamosa managed three shots at the Hudson keeper as Sean Corpstein, Max Mueller and Cameron Weston all tallied one shot each for the hosts. Hudson fired 11 shots overall at Bickford.

“We ended the game playing our best soccer,” said Weston. “We frustrated Hudson with our energy and put pressure on their defense. Overall, this was a solid effort. Hudson is a very good team and we’ll learn from this loss.”

The Raider JV boys were handed a 3-0 setback.

Anamosa was shutout shooting but held the Pirates to a mere six shots of their own.

Hudson led 2-0 at the half scoring three minutes and nine minutes into the contest.

“We started slow but once Jordan Fliehler got out there, he really settled down our defense,” said Weston. “Stu Miller played well too.”

Anamosa opened their 2007 campaign Thursday, March 29, with a narrow 1-0 setback at Beckman.

Mueller led the visitors with three shots while Corpstein and Weston added two shots each for the Raiders.

After a scoreless first half, the Blazers tallied the game’s lone goal with 27 minutes remaining in the contest.

Bickford made seven saves.

The Raider JV team was edged in a 3-1 final.

Josh Fairbanks scored for Anamosa at the 26-minute mark of the first half tying the score at the break before the Blazers tallied two second half goals to win.

Nick Krueger led the Raiders with two shots.

EPWORTH— With a dominating field event performance leading the way, the Anamosa boys track team claimed a pair of titles and even scored a pair of runner-up finishes in high jump, shot put, long jump and discus events during a sensational showing during the outdoor season-opener at Western Dubuque Monday, March 26.

“We placed seven kids in the top-4 in the field events, that’s a pretty good way to start the season,” said Raider boys track coach Wes Wilson. “Overall the kids ran really well too. Nate Vaughn won the 3200 and our relays are coming along.”

Colten Kelly easily claimed the high jump title clearing an amazing 6’ 8” while Aaron Beadle was tops in the shot put after his personal-best 48’ 11 1/2” toss.

Ahrendsen placed fourth in the 400 hurdles after his 1:13.09 clocking.

The Raiders went back to work Friday, March 30, competing at Vinton where they placed second as a team scoring 74 points.

Kelly flew 6’ 6” to take the high jump title and Beadle added a title in the discus after his 136’ 8” effort and was also second in the shot put throwing 48’ 4”.

Breon also placed in the high jump as his 6’ effort was good enough for fifth while English threw sixth in the discus with a 122’ 7’ effort.

Kelly and Vondracek were second and third in the long jump flying 19’ 6” and 18’ 9 3/4”, respectively.

“Another awesome field event effort,” said Wilson. “This was another great meet for us.”

Nate Vaughn won the 800 meters with a 2:03.94 clocking while the 4x800 and shuttle hurdle teams both scored runner-up points with times of 8:56.13 and 1:07.52, respectively.

Brady Vaughn also placed fifth for the Raider boys in the 1600 meter run after a 5:05.95 clocking.

Anamosa wrestlers compete at state AAU
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor
DES MOINES— Making an impact at the state AAU wrestling championships in Des Moines March 24-25, Anamosa’s Logan Hewitt came away with a title while Midland’s Ryan Leonard and Kyle Pegorick also placed at the competitive event.

Hewitt claimed the 130B championship rolling to his first-ever state title and the first for any Raider youth wrestler since Moza Fay 11 years ago.

In four thrilling bouts, Hewitt gave up a mere two points over the two days at Veteran's Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines, those coming in the 10-2 championship-winning effort against Dalton Clavarell.

Hewitt also posted a pair of decision victories while also coming through with a pin in the semi-finals.
Zach Hansen and Jason Bowers also represented the Anamosa team at the tournament and won matches before bowing out just short of placing at the C115 and C100 classes, respectively.

“We had a very successful season,” said Anamosa AAU coach Shane Forbes.

“We challenged the boys the last two weeks of practice and they really stepped it up and it paid off.”

Midland’s Ryan Leonard and Kyle Pegorick also placed at the state meet.

Leonard finished fourth overall in the B140 class while Pegorick was sixth.

Springville’s Mitch Wantock, who wrestles with the Anamosa team, also took part in the AAU state tourney competing in the 125C level.

“We had a couple of close calls that kept a few kids off the podium,” said Forbes. “But they all wrestled tough. Jones County has some future athletes who will be returning to Des Moines again.”

Also helping with the Anamosa youth wrestling program were assistant coaches Brent Durgin, Jason Hewitt, Brett McLaughlin, Mike Wantock, Lane Schultz and Bob Dolan.

“It’s all the helping hands that is taking youth wrestling to the next level here,” said Forbes. “We are putting Jones County on the map and these wrestlers should be proud of what they’ve accomplished.”

Anamosa also had a pair of competitors at the AAU state pee-wee championships held in Waterloo at Young Arena.

Sammy Dolan and Chase McLaughlin were in the 2nd-grade 64-pound class with 28 of wrestlers with Dolan placing sixth overall.

Dolan was edged just 2-0 in the semi-finals against defending state champion Trent Johnson, of Dike, who went on to take the title.
