ANAMOSA — Coming into the 2007 Men’s Eastern Iowa Golf Association tournament Saturday, August 11, and Sunday, August 12, Anamosa’s Wapsi Country Club was the overwhelming favorite to win their third-straight championship hosting the event with a huge home course advantage.
While visiting Mount Vernon Hillcrest gave the Wapsi team a good run for their money, the 10-team Eastern Iowa get-together started with Wapsi leading and ended with Wapsi leading and holding the coveted trophy after two days of stellar golf in stifling heat that saw temperatures soar into the mid-90’s.
The 12 Wapsi Country Club golfers dominated the tournament from start-to-finish leading from wire-to-wire as the Anamosa team opened with a 691 (349-342) card Saturday, and held a 14-shot lead over second-place Mount Vernon then expanded the lead on the final day of the 36-hole tournament shooting a 697 (352-345).
Wapsi’s 342 team-score during their second tour of duty Saturday through the challenging and narrow home course, was the low nine-hole team score of the entire tournament. Only Solon’s 344 on Sunday bested Wapsi’s final 345 score to bring home the championship.

Tipton tallied a 599 (295-304) team score overall and edged Fawn Creek by three shots after the stellar Anamosa team came through with a 602 (295-307) card as the tournament proved to be a two-team race for most of the day at the 18-hole meet.

DES MOINES — A season that saw him hit .430 with 12 doubles, one triple, one home run, 26 runs scored and 17 RBIs, earned Midland junior outfielder Jed Holland all-state honors from the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association (IHSBCA).
Holland was selected as a class 1A second-team outfielder by the IHSBCA and was one of only four Big East players selected to all-state teams by the coaches joining Lisbon’s Ethan Kamerling (class 1A 1st-team catcher), Calamus-Wheatland’s Kirby Rock (1A 1st-team first-baseman) and Northeast’s Shawn Johnston (2A 2nd-team outfielder).
“This year Jed really worked hard in the spring on making some adjustments with his swing,” said Midland baseball coach Josh Soper. “Mainly using his hips and lower body more and he really responded well and has become a complete hitter. I am extremely happy for Jed and our program. As a coach, it is extremely rewarding to work with kids and see them improve. In this case, Jed has become a top player in the state and he deserves this recognition.”
