Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor |
ANAMOSA — There were plenty of familiar names on the leaderboard at the annual Anamosa City Golf tournament held at the Fawn Creek Country Club Saturday, July 21, and then moved to the Wapsi Country Club Sunday, July 22.
But in the end, two golfers bested the talented field as Rich DeLong and Loni Seeley tied for first after two-day totals of 135 forcing a playoff at the 36-hole event.
DeLong edged Seeley in a one-hole playoff and claimed the honor as Anamosa’s City tournament champion.
DeLong opened his tournament with a three-under par 69 (35-34) at the long Fawn Creek Country Club Saturday and trailed the day-one leader Seeley by a single stroke, who fired a sensational four-under par 68 (31-37).
Tim Kula was also in the hunt after the first day shooting a 70 (37-33) while Dillon Eggers (37-34) and Sean Smith (36-35) were just three shots back after rounds of 71 each.
Al Norton (38-34), Mike Carrier (38-34) and Kelly Ketelsen (37-35) tallied rounds of 72 each and were just four shots off the pace as the golfers completed their Fawn Creek totals Saturday.
The tournament moved to the challenging Wapsi Country Club for the final 18 holes Sunday and it was there where DeLong made his move.
DeLong fired an even-par 66 (32-34) at Wapsi while Seeley made his way through the course with a 67 (36-31).
Norton fired a phenomenal 65 (34-31) during the final round and finished with a 137 two-day total which was good enough for third overall at the tournament while Mike McGreevy, who opened with a 75 (37-38) at Fawn Creek, finished with the low 18-hole total of the day on Sunday tallying a sensational 64 (31-33) which placed McGreevy in a tie for fourth overall with a 139.
Eggers also finished with 139 and tied for fourth making his way through the Wapsi Country Club course with a 68 (33-35) while Mitch Martensen also fired a 139 and tied for fourth. Martensen opened with a 73 (38-35) on Saturday and closed out his tournament with a 66 (34-32) at Wapsi to move up three spots in the standings.
Smith closed out his tournament with a 69 (33-36) at Wapsi and finished in a tie for seventh after his 140 two-day total.
Doug McNamara added a 140 after opening with a 73 (36-37) at Fawn Creek and closed out with a 67 (33-34) at Wapsi to tie Smith for seventh overall.
Carrier tallied a 69 (35-34) at Wapsi and turned in a 141 card to turn in a top-10 finish at ninth overall as did Kula who closed the tournament with a 71 (35-36) at Wapsi and a 141 total.
Just missing the top-10 overall at the Anamosa City golf championship was Justin Doser (75-68) and Ketelsen who fired rounds of 143 each as Ketelsen worked through a 71 (39-32) at Wapsi Sunday. Bret McNamara totaled a 144 (75-69) to take 12th overall. |

ANAMOSA — For the third time overall and the second time in consecutive years, former Anamosa High School superstar Moza Fay hosted a wrestling camp at his alma mater.
Fay, a University of Northern Iowa junior coming off a sensational sophomore campaign that saw an NCAA Nationals berth this past winter for the Panthers, was in Anamosa Thursday, July 26, Friday, July 27 and Saturday, July 28, giving area youth a glimpse at what it takes to wrestle at the elite level.
“It’s always great to come back and teach the kids here in Anamosa what I’ve learned over the years,” said Fay who brought teammates Nick Baima and Trevor Kittleson with him to the camp that hosted dozens of area youth. “I like watching the Raider program grow and I want Anamosa to always be successful. This is my little way of helping. There’s a lot of talent here and hopefully the kids picked up on some things that will help them become better wrestlers down the road.”

Plenty of knowledge to share

Fay, Baima and Kittleson are no strangers to hosting wrestling camps having worked the UNI camps in Cedar Falls already this summer that saw more than 100 kids at each session.
“I’m impressed with the work ethic the kids here in Anamosa have,” said Fay. “There are always new things to learn and these kids have soaked up everything we’ve taught during each session.”
Hands-on teaching

Lacy, Bildstein named to Northeast all-district softball

Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor |
ANAMOSA — Making up one of the most talented batteries in the Tri-Rivers Conference and all of eastern Iowa, Raider sophomore pitcher Mallory Lacy and sophomore catcher Chelsey Bildstein earned coveted Northeast all-district awards as selected by area coaches recently.
Lacy turned in a brilliant campaign for the 26-16 Raider softball team this past summer logging a 20-13 record in the pitchers’ circle while working 210 innings pitched with a whopping 284 strikeouts and 1.87 earned run average.
“Mallory proved herself as one of the top pitchers in the area with what she accomplished this summer and is well deserving of this high award,” said Anamosa softball coach Rick Delagardelle. “With some injuries we had this year, she had to pile up a lot of innings and she had no problem doing that and still turned in a great season.”
Bildstein, one of the top catchers in eastern Iowa, was behind the plate for every game Lacy pitched this past summer.
Not only did the talented sophomore have a sensational defensive campaign, but also hit .262 for the Raiders with 11 runs scored, 28 hits, 21 RBIs and 11 doubles.
“Chelsey was a big reason for the success of our pitching staff this year,” said Delagardelle.
“Her job behind the plate has not gone unnoticed. She’s a calming influence for our pitchers and they know they can throw any pitch they want in any spot they want and Chelsey is going to grab it no matter where it’s thrown. That confidence allows our pitchers a lot of flexibility when it comes to getting key strikeouts. And we had a lot of those this year.”
Joining Lacy and Bildstein on the class 3A Northeast all-district team are: pitchers- Lacy, Katie Murphy, sr. (West Delaware), Alyssa Hannasch, jr. (Oelwein) and Hailey Bickford, fr. (Maquoketa); catchers- Bildstein, Renae Cooper, sr. (Cedar Rapids Xavier), Sam Reimer, so. (Dubuque Wahlert), Jess Stika, sr. (Crestwood) and Sarah Hoffman, jr. (Western Dubuque); first-base- Jennifer Keitel, 8th, (Central DeWitt); shortstop- Molly Link, jr. (Western Dubuque), Katlyn Heisermann, sr. (West Delaware), Betsy Farley, sr. (Waukon), Shelby Knutson, so. (Decorah), Shelby Perkins, so. (Marion) and Niki Green, 8th, (Central DeWitt); third-base- Audrey Kass, so. (Dubuque Wahlert); outfielders- Megan Zenisek, sr. (Cedar Rapids Xavier) and Alyssa White, sr. (Marion).
West Delaware’s Kevin Schuchman, who guided the Hawks to the 2007 state tournament and WaMaC Conference softball championship, was named class 3A Northeast all-district Coach of the Year. |
