Fay qualifies for national tourney
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor

CEDAR FALLS— It was late February of 2006 and Moza Fay had just finished fourth at the NCAA West Regional in Wyoming and closed a sensational red-shirt freshman campaign for the Panthers.

He wasn’t the least bit happy though.

“Last season was tough,” said the former Anamosa High School standout as he wrestled all over the University of Northern Iowa roster finishing at 174-pounds. “I didn’t have a set weight to wrestle at and that hurt me as I got into the regional. This year, 157-pounds was all mine and that has made things much easier on me and I feel like I’m wrestling about as well as I ever have right now.”

It would be hard to argue with the results Fay’s produced after the Panther sophomore claimed an NCAA West Regional 157-pound championship and automatic berth into the NCAA National Championships March 15-17 in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

“I felt confident coming into the West Regional tournament this year,” said Fay. “I had already beaten most of the guys I was going to face at the regional and felt if I could just keep doing what I had been doing all season long, I’d be fine.”

Fay was more than fine, he was dominant claiming the title with two major decisions and a technical fall rout in front of his home fans at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls Saturday, March 3.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet that I’m going to the NCAA National Championships,” said Fay who is ranked 12th in the nation at 157-pounds this season. “My goal at the start of the season was to work by way to nationals and then become an all-American. I’m right there now. I can see my goals right in front of me. It’s time for me to go after them and work harder than I ever have before.”

Fay opened his day Saturday with a 14-4 major decision over Wyoming’s Dane Fuhrman in 157-pound quarter-final action.

“This was a good first match for me,” said Fay. “I got a lot of takedowns and worked on some things and it was a nice warm-up match for what I was going to face later in the day.”

The win advanced the former Raider two-time state champion to the semi-finals where he tallied a 21-6 technical fall rout over Northern Colorado’s Luke Salazer that ended at the 6:34 mark of the third period.

“When I wrestled this guy earlier in the season I pinned him and he tried doing some different things this time to not get pinned,” said Fay. “I had to change my strategy a bit during the match. This time he was ready for the moves I was throwing at him but I was still able to score enough to move on.”

In the championship Fay tallied yet another major decision after a 14-6 rout over South Dakota State’s Andy Everson.

“When we wrestled South Dakota State earlier in the season, I wrestled a different kid,” said Fay. “Early on there was a lot of rolling around in this match and the crowd was really getting into it too. I finally threw a neck-wrench into him and got a takedown and 3-point nearfall and that got me going.”

As a team, UNI claimed their 22nd-straight West Region championship scoring 96 points topping runner-up Northern Colorado’s 73.5 point total.

Entering the NCAA National Championships, Fay will walk into the biggest tournament of his life at The Palace at Auburn Hills with a sensational 32-9 overall record this winter and winner of 17 of his last 18 matches.

“I’ve got a week and a half to get ready for this and I’m going to take advantage of the time and work hard,” said Fay. “It’s a cliche’, but I’m just going to take them one match at a time and prepare for this tournament like a team would prepare for a playoff game. With the schedule we have here at UNI wrestling most of the top teams in the nation, it prepares you as much as you can get prepared for that level. I’m nervous, but excited. It’s a whole different level of wrestling I’ve never experienced. I just can’t wait to get out there and give it my best shot. That’s all I can ask for out of myself.”

Fay was one of six UNI wrestlers to qualify for the NCAA national tournament and one of just three Panthers to claim regional wrestling championships for the hosts.

New signs designed by AHS art class move Raiders to the WaMaC
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor
Works of art
It’s not official until the Raider baseball and softball teams throw their final pitches later this summer, but Nancy Kula’s Anamosa High School Graphic Design class made the school’s gym ready for the jump to the WaMaC this fall completing dazzling design work with signs for each of the 12 members of the league. The Graphic Design class unveiled their work for the new conference Anamosa is about to embark for the 2007-2008 school year.

The WaMaC will host Benton Community, Center Point-Urbana, Independence, Marion, Vinton-Shellsburg and Waterloo Columbus in the west division while Western Dubuque, West Delaware, Maquoketa, Dyersville Beckman, Central DeWitt and the Raiders will comprise the east division of the league.

Each sign required two students to work together to create the new signage in the gym. The students spent 12 class periods drawing and painting their signs. The most important element in this class project was the students create signs that matched and had a high degree of craftsmanship. For their efforts, the class enjoyed pizza and pop provided by the Boosters Wednesday, February 21. The Boosters also provided the materials to paint the signs. Class members and the signs they painted were: Samantha Appleby and Kirsten DeRosia (Anamosa); Gavin Eilers and Marshal Dusheck (Independence); Kenneth Beadle and Caitlin Weers (West Delaware); Aubrie Brokel and Ashly Nickels (Marion); Kelly Clark and Natasha Kennebeck (Western Dubuque); Nick Conley and Adam Hinrichsen (Central DeWitt); Travis Henson and Ezekial Hermanstorfer (Benton Community); Haley Ketelsen, Ariel Schrader and Kendra McElmeel (Maquoketa); Stuart Miller and Ricky Ulferts (Vinton-Shellsburg); Tyler Parmenter and Zach Twatchman (Center Point-Urbana); Dylan Thomas and Justin Tjaden (Dyersville Beckman) and Steven Siver (Waterloo Columbus).

The new WaMaC signs will be installed in the gym during spring break with the old Tri-Rivers Conference signs being presented to each school’s athletic director to hang in their respective schools. (Journal-Eureka photo by Daryl Schepanski)
