Anamosa aerial attack picks up
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor

MOUNT VERNON — Moving the football up and down the field Friday, September 28, the Anamosa football team played the kind of game offensively coach Matt Malausky knew his team could.

“We picked up 275 yards with our passing game against a pretty good Mount Vernon defense,” said Malausky as Raider quarterbacks Brady Vaughn and Tony Lueken lit up the Mount Vernon sky with sensational pin-point passing. “That’s a number a little closer to ones I’d like to see on a consistent basis from this team. But what also hurt was our six turnovers. That’s something that has been a little too consistent with this team this year and if we can limit those mistakes, I think we’re close, very close to becoming a team that can win.”

Anamosa (0-5, 0-3) was humbled in the 52-6 setback against a Mount Vernon team still looking for their own identity under first year coach Duanne Orr, who took over the reins of the Mustang program from longtime coaching icon Jim Bellamy.

“This isn’t your normal Mount Vernon-type team, but they sure looked like it against us” said Malausky who himself is building a program and building confidence with his own players in the new up-tempo style offense. “This should be another big confidence-building game for us. Even though the score may not show it, we made improvements offensively and even made improvements with the way we played on the defensive side of the football too.”

The Raiders marched the football right down the field on their opening possession, only to have it ended with an interception deep in Mustang territory.

“That just seemed to kind of set the tone for the way the game was going to go for us,” said Malausky. “We’d show we could move the football, then we’d make a mistake and give Mount Vernon the football right back.”

The Mustangs didn’t waste the extra opportunities as well scoring a whopping 21 first quarter points before adding two more touchdowns in the second stanza taking a huge 34-0 lead into the halftime break.

“To the kids’ credit, they never hung their heads and kept fighting, just like they always have been all season long,” said Malausky. “Even after the rough first half and trailing by a lopsided score, we kept attacking in the second half and continued to put up some nice numbers offensively.”

Overall the Raiders tallied 299 yards of total offense while the hosts didn’t do too much better piling up 301 total yards against a Raider defense who also were playing some inspired football but time and again were pinned against their own goal line due to Anamosa turnovers.

“Our offense didn’t help our defense quite a few times with some of those turnovers,” said Malausky. “Mount Vernon had some short fields for quite a few of their scores and that makes things pretty tough on the defense.”

Making the big play

Mount Vernon went right back to work in the third quarter scoring two more touchdowns leading 46-0 entering the final frame before adding an early fourth quarter score taking a huge 52-0 advantage.

“Even in a game like this one with the score being what it was, we still had kids wanting the ball and wanting to make plays,” said Malausky. “Like that last play of the game. Colten Kelly made a read and we changed the play and it turned into an 80-yard touchdown as time expired.”

Kelly grabbed the perfectly thrown strike from Lueken at the Mustang 50-yard-line and raced the final 50 yards out-running Mount Vernon defenders tight-roping the sideline all the way into the end zone.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better way to end the game for us,” said Malausky. “We had moved the ball so well all game long and never got into the end zone then all of a sudden we bust a big play and score.”

Lueken completed 16-of-41 passes for 252 yards while Vaughn was 3-of-5 starting the game at quarterback passing for 23 yards.

Kelly led the receiving corps with five catches for 153 yards while Tucker Vondracek tallied three catches for 13 yards.

Marshal Dusheck led the Anamosa defense making 10 tackles including one tackle for a loss while Jason Breon added eight more.

“This was our best offensive game of the year,” said Malausky. “Now we want to take the next step.”

Busy running week for Raiders
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor

EPWORTH — Ideal conditions met runners as Anamosa took to the course in Epworth Thursday, September 27, as the Raiders continue to prime for huge conference and district meets in the very near future.

“That’s what all this is for right now,” said Anamosa cross country coach Phil Kauder. “We want to be running our best when it comes to conference and districts and slowly but surely, we seem to be getting there.”

Midland hammers home another win
By Daryl Schepanski - Sports Editor
WYOMING — Using an offense that can attack from all over the court, Midland volleyball coach Natalie Schurbon received sensational efforts from hitters Aubrey Walters, Kayla Thordsen and Brandi Larkey in a four-game Big East Conference triumph hosting North Cedar Thursday, September 27.

“Wow,!” said Schurbon after her team hammered home an impressive 25-18, 19-25, 25-16, 25-16 triumph over the Knights. “That’s how to play volleyball. I knew the girls could play this way. We were moving and hitting together as a team. Our coverage was great, our hustle was amazing and our setters were doing their jobs.”

Midland (8-8, 4-2) recorded a whopping 31 kills in the match led by Walters, who collected 13 kills on 20 attacks at the offensive net. Thordsen and Larkey each chipped in with nine kills each as Thordsen tallied 25 attacks and Larkey another 21 in the match.

Erika Lineburg paced the Eagle offense with 15 assists as she shared the duties with Natasha Yarolem, who added another 12 assists in the victory.

Lineburg was also a perfect 20-of-20 serving the volleyball coming through with three service aces.

“The back row helped too by keeping the ball off the net so we could attack,” said Schurbon. “If we keep attacking, we will win ball games. Kayla had a really good night and Aubrey got on top of the ball well also.”

Larkey added eight digs while Yarolem chipped in with seven more.

Walters swatted home three blocks back at the Knight offense while Larkey also tallied three blocks for the formidable Midland defense. Thordsen chipped in with two blocks for the hosts.

The Eagles took to the road Tuesday, September 25, traveling to Big East volleyball powerhouse Camanche and were handed a rough 16-25, 20-25, 16-25 defeat.

“We had a tough run with Camanche,” said Schurbon. “In all but one match, we had the lead but weren’t able to keep it. We continue to improve, but have too many errors by different people to be able to pull out the wins. Shelby Marr and Kayla Thordsen were playing very well and our digs and coverage were a little slow, but improving. I would just like to see a 100-percent effort all the time.”
